The cable retractor on the left side is broken and the cable just piles up when closing the tailgate. I've found new aftermarket replacement retractors at several classic Chevy parts suppliers. Question is how do I get to the retractor? From inside the LR wheel well or do I remove interior trim to access it? I can see approximately where it is located by looking in the gas filler door but I can't tell how to get to it. Anyone have any clues?
thanks

There are access panels from the inside. You have to remove the interior panels to get to them.

If I remember correctly, one of the mounting screws for the rear seat back support brackets mounted to the side wall above the wheel tub, is also one of the 4 screws that holds the retractor in place. This gives you an idea of where the retractor is located. And yes the interior has to be removed in the area to get to the retractor.
