Short story is I bought a 1993 Chevy Lumina last night; it ran very badly but was able to get it home.

Tried to start it this morning but; it would start, car cranks fine. I sprayed some carb cleaner down the PCV hose fitting on the air intake duct and, it started then idled roughly.

Drove it to a shop close by; had to 'power brake' it to keep from dying at lights. Got to shop and scanned it; 4 codes (IAC, coolant temp sensor and a couple of others). Cleared the codes but the temp sensor remained; replaced it and cleared the code (14) again but it kept coming back, the 3 others stayed off.

Drove car; it ran rough and is down on power but no longer stalled at stoplights. I swung into a gas station and topped off the tank with premium fuel, started driving home, was almost there then the car died in flight. At least I was close to the house I was able to coast on in.

Now no start at all; engine cranks well but nothing, not even a sputter when I sprayed carb cleaner down the intake.

I'm guessing something ignition related but; underhood work isn't my forte.

EDIT: I went out and hit the key again; car started right up but still ran rough although it still didn't die in gear, drove it next to the house and parked it for now.

I had a similar thing happen with my mothers '93. That was back in about 2002 and for the life of me I cannot recall what the problem was. I do know the GM tech took about 2 hrs to narrow it down to the culprit. It was something in the ignition and was very expensive part at about $300 at the time (circa 2003). It was a part they suspected was the culprit but being so expensive you did not replace it unless you exhausted all other possibilities by checking.

Was not the computer although those GM body styles had durability problems with them as well but that involved sudden stalling for no apparent reason, then back to normal after it sat for a while. Bad solder in the circuit boards in the computer. Telltale sign of computer problems was that if you took a plastic handle screwdriver and rapped the metal case of the computer its would start.

I'll look at the AC Delco parts web site and see if something refreshes my recollection of the part name.

update Ignition Control Module rings a bell but I cannot be certain.

Please post the codes again ?

Can you test the fuel pressure ?

Lots of sensors can mess with the engine ?

God bless

You're right. I forgot about this thread.

I pulled the heads, replaced the gaskets (one was blown), news plugs/wires and the car ran much better....

Tranny died a few days later and, I got rid of the car early last year.
