My alternator is drawing 2 Amps when the car is off, draining my battery. When I unplug the alternator the amp draw disappears. What are my options, I'm new at diagnosing electrical problems. Thank you.

Do you have a stock alternator, which is externally regulated, or has it been replaced with an internally regulated alternator?
Did this problem develop all by itself, or did it follow some kind of work you did on the car, or did the problem already exist when you bought the car?

Those who choose an automatic transmission want transportation. Those who choose a manual transmission want to drive. |

The problem existed when i bought it. It looks like it could be the original alt, 2 wire plug with a seperate hot.

Take it off and take it to a auto parts store that tests them. It could be the alternator or the regulator.

....2 wire plug with a seperate hot.
Both alternator types use a 2 wire plug. Look at the orientation of the blade contacts. If they are side by side like a wall outlet in a house, the alt is externally regulated. If they are in line with each other, it is internally regulated.

While you are on this....
Just a quick question. I changed my 2 wire external reg alt on my 70 Chevy pickup to an internal regulated alternator...because I think they are better and I opted for more amperage.
Some folks say tie the two alternator terminals together and supply that with a key on wire with a diode to turn it on so it doesn't back feed. Could not find any EXACT info on the web. Thanks in advance. OUTLAW
