asking this and it may have often been asked. on a 64 impala, are two speed wiper arms different than the single speed. I swear I've read they are but what to confirm. thanks.

I have seen this reference in the GM parts book, however, I have yet to learn what the difference is. Unfortunately, you would have to have one of each, to know exactly what the difference is.

2 speed wiper arms are longer than 1 speed. They are normally marked on the back side
RH1SPD/LH1SPD or RH2SPD/LH2SPD.
I am taking some pictures of the two in the next few days that I can post.

In the May 1999 issue of the Late Great Chevy magazine an article by Denny Williams has pictures and text on wiper arms from 1958-1964.
The article lists the single speed '63-'64 arms are 13.1/2" and the two speed are 14 5/8" measured from the rivet (at the chrome knob) to the tip of the arm.

This issue has always bugged me. What possible reason was there for Chevrolet to design 2 different sets of wiper arms for the same windshield that had the same dimensions? Makes no sense or cents. I thought maybe the wiper shafts might be located in different locations. But my car (62) had single speed wipers on it when I bought it (though not stock). I installed a 2 speed wiper motor using the same linkage and had no issues.
I have always been confused by this.

Just guessing here. 2 speed has more power and can swing a longer arm.

I will try to get to the garage and check out the difference but I believe the answer is the passenger arm (2speed) has a different angle of bend from straight at tip.
