Drove the sedan delivery a little today--pulled the gas cap of to a lot of woosh---thought the cap was supposed to be vented--PO had a small hole drilled in top but I guess it wasn't working---supposed to have resealed original tank(with baffles), on a carburated engine with electric fuel pump--no return lines. do you think vent tube is stopped up--need to find it I guess or just the wrong cap. Have a locking one that is supposed to be correct---it on for now---should I just go ahead and try to find the original one or stick a rag in it. Thanks

All Chevrolet gas caps, 1960 and prior, were vented. Throw the cap away and buy a new one.

Why is it a problem if you don't use a pressure relief, or vented cap? Heat expands the gas, pressurizes tank. Then it cools and retracts. Cycle this a bunch of times and imagine what it does to the metal. If you want to simulated it, try a bending a paperclip back and forth a bunch of times until it work hardens and breaks.

I have a "Tanks" "plastic" tank in my '46 and it has a vent port on the top of the tank. I ran a length of rubber tubing from there along the filler tube to just below where the filler tube goes through the fender.
