Thanks guys. If this thunder goes away this morning, we'll start cleaning up the dog house and doing the POR-15 on the under side. Wife said she would help today and maybe even son, since I am trying to restore TWO 50s right now! I plan to adjust the shift linkage, install 12v generator (converted from 6), voltage regulator, and other odds and ends. Oops. now I see lightning...maybe not!

Yeah, rain and chances of rain all day. I stayed in and cleaned parts. Some even got painted; not many. The inner fender panels will be POR-15'd, but the hardware will just get rattle can gloss black. No need to waste that expensive paint on stuff that will cause it to peel from use; ie springs, hinges, etc. Pics:

What a long, hot, crappy day. Started the day by separating the driveshaft and tranny to make sure I didn't screw up my shim job. Then putting that all back together. Moved on to installing the flywheel covers...and the holes NEVER line up...but finally they did. Then onto SEVERAL hours fighting with the shifter box, only to find out I had the spring in backwards...

Tomorrow I have my helpers coming over. We hope to wire wheel, prep, and POR-15 the inside of the doghouse, install the genny and voltage regulator, add the bypass oil filter, and anything else we can knock out. This heat is killing me! No pics today, sorry.

I'm a little behind on updates. I started wire wheeling the doghouse to find the thin spots. The good news is that there aren't as many as I thought, even in the inner fenders. There is one pretty bad spot. Not being a welder I'll have to call for help again. I think I can cut out and fabricate the piece though. I am also going back around the car and going through the brakes again to be on the safe side. See pics. I'm having trouble with uploads and will try to add more later.

What is the doghouse? See it all the time, but don't know what it is. Know what it is on vans and trucks.

Sorry, it might not be the correct term on a 49-54. That's just what my dad always called the front end when he worked on his '56 when I was a little kid. Am I misusing that term Bob?

Not much to report...just lots of wire wheeling, metal prepping, and painting with POR-15. A few set backs... The heat and humidity and a short two day trip to Dale Hollow kind of took the wind out of my sails, but I'm starting to get my work ethic back. Getting ready to order my antisqueak kit from NCA (thanks for the heads up Bruce Pearce!) and I have already ordered my first piece of sheet metal from EMS...exciting things ahead!

Nice job on making your own patch panel. I find it very satisfying and always love seeing others forming good patches.

I made an EXTREME amount of headway today. It's amazing what you can get done when you aren't dodging rain (and this week HAIL!)...anyway. Today I got up early, spent the morning wire wheeling the driver side fender, inner fender, and radiator support frame. After lunch it was on to POR-15 degreaser and metal prep. In between steps I reassembled the passenger fender with all the anti rattle seals and gaskets glued in place! By late afternoon I had the first coat of POR-15 on the driver fender, inner fender, and radiator support. And now, just in time for dinner, I have the 2nd coat of POR-15 on everything and my driver side metal patch fabricated, using the template from the passenger side! WOW. The wife went out and bought me hardware for reassembly. Tomorrow we coat the POR-15 with rustoleum, glue on the driver side anti rattle kit, trim the new driver side rocker panel for a temporary pop rivet fitment, reinstall the radiator, wire wheel and POR-15 the under side of the hood, and Sunday, hopefully after going back to church for the first time in months, we will reassemble the whole frontend and be done with phase one! Sound good? Pics later, time for dinner!

Well, both fenders are now reinstalled, including inner baffles, rock shields, etc. The gaps to the front doors are pretty good, but the hood is an awfully tight fit. I tried loosening the radiator side bolts to let the fenders "breath" away from each other a bit, but it's still pretty tight. The fender height is also good and I was very careful to match the original thickness of the rubber and shims under the radiator. The top fender bolts nearest the door are set just right so that the fender and door lines are flush. I kinda wish I hadn't taken the front end all the way apart, but I really wanted to get all the rust out, paint everything front and back, and do it right. Hopefully I can find some hints in the Fisher body manual? I don't know. OH...and I fit up my first EMS rocker panel today. Great fit, although the it's not welded in yet. Some pics:

Front end is all back together except splash pan and bumpers. Yesterday I wire wheeled, metal prepped, and painted the underneath side of the hood. I'm a little intrigued as to how the fenders and hood can line up perfectly in the front and perfectly in the back, but yet the hood is low in the middle of the fender. More work to do I guess.
