Wow! That's some extensive and impressive body work being done. Should be a good, solid car when done.

Thank you Sir! It's a labor of love. I don't know if you've read the back story, but this very car was mine in high school and college. I drove it frokm 1986-1993. It sat 5 years at my parents place and we sold it in 1998. In 2014, I bought it back from the man we sold it to. He had left it sitting in a field for many of those years! I will never make my money back on this car, but I've "won the lottery" in regards to sentimental value! It's so good to be almost done with sheet metal replacement. I hope to be done with that in two months.

I only worked a half day today. I need rest for a long week. Fitting is coming along fine, not as hard as I thought. I measured and drilled the body bolt holes in the new inner pan and bolted down the rebuilt rail with fresh new rubber squares, bolts, and washers. I even drilled out a broken off body bolt from its flat nut that goes inside the rail and retapped the threads to the same size! I never thought I could do that with such finesse! It all looks great! See pics!

By the way, that rear cross member you see has about an 8 inch hole rotted through it on the inside. Anyone have an extra frame I could buy one off of?

Looking at the work you have done maybe you could make that frame crossmember.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm not sure I could handle that piece though. Maybe I could have someone weld in a thick piece of box tubing. I don't know how to stick weld heavy gauge.

It's not much thicker than the sheet metal your working with. Maybe 10 gauge? or less than 1/8" if I remember right. I had to repair my crossmember. I just welded in a patch, a piece of tubing the right size might be hard to find and the crossmember is built the same way your frame is. Some people call it top hat, U shape with a flat welded on the top of the U. But you probably already know that.

Thanks for that! I hadn't heard of that actually. I could call my old neighbor that owns the metal shop I use and have him look under the car. He might have it in stock! Thanks for the advice!

If you haven't already welded in your rear floor panels, it might be easier to remove the rear crossmember now to repair or replace. The rivets can be tough to get out.

Unfortunately, they're tacked in now. I have all the patches tacked in on the driver side and the rear corner is now rebuilt, fabricated, and tacked in. It's been a great weekend so far. Here are pics!

Another milestone. Floor all patched, welded in, seam sealed, and painted. It's not beautiful, but it will never be a show car. Almost back on Schedule. Tail pans are next! Then the rear quarter.

I really admire someone who can do can do this kind of extensive work. Hats off to you. And having "your" car back must be special.

It's also nice to see what my car looks like, under the skin, so to speak.

We had a 4dr '50 when I was a kid, and it's something that I've wanted for a long time.

Thanks for the encouragement. I welded in the tail pans tonight and I didn't do as well as hoped. Hopefully I can fix it. Pics...

Great weekend so far. Friday night I cut loose the new outer tail pan and refit it. The gaps are now better and I welded the latch pillar back in. It now locks and closes nice and solid! Today I continued welding and grinding and fitted up the new rear quarter. It fits perfectly! Right now I have it pop riveted in place. See Pics!

I think she smiled a toothless grin. She goes to the dentist in about 3 weeks! First I have to address her "gum disease" with sanding and grinding. Fortunately no more cutting!
