Like they say - the difference between big boys and the proto-big boys is the cost of their toys.

After storing grandpa's chevy for (literally 15 years) till I bought a house and kicking out the girl friend - I brought it home. I started the rebuild when I was in my early 20's, got distracted - put the car in storage and just never got serious again. I have very found memories of calling from pay phones to ask for help - the gas gage never worked and the horrors of the gas tank. "Hello Dad... <pause> Yea... I'm stuck on the freeway and the car wont start. Can you bring the air compressor? I think the line is stuffed again". I guess I should state my mechanical skill level - I've been around / working on them since I was little. I do all my repairs. I worked as a body man when I went to school. I love to turn a wrench (its much more fun when its a get away from the real world).

So, while taking my time but with memories of far more innocent times dancing in my head I want to form a plan, and work the plan.

My vision is to stay vintage / era correct - no drastic rod, super charger, etc. I also want to drive her this summer. Not done... but on the road.

Where to start? Immediate -
- Get the wheels turning - they don't want to turn easily right now. I figure the bearing grease turned into something resembling a soft rock.

- Since the motor is toast, rebuild / replace with a working 235.

- With the engine out - clean the engine bay. Sand / pain make pretty.

Now where do I go from here?
I have electrical stuff - the rubber on the wires are a freak show...

It's overwhelming when I think about it...

Hi Justin,

Welcome to Chevy Talk! Sounds like you are looking at a fun project.

What year and model Chevy do you have? Post a couple of pictures if you have the time.

Was the engine running on some level when you parked the car last? If so, I bet you could get it running again with just a bit of lubrication.

Lots of advice on this Forum--I'll let the experts take it from here!

Hi Justin
I would pull the wheels off and check the brakes for binding first. Turn the adjuster wheels on the rear of the brakes to help make it easier to remove the wheels. Go from there. Pick one thing at a time to work on or check out. These cars are really pretty easy to work on and there is lots of help here.

First thing to do is purchase a reproduction shop manual for the car, it will repay the 25 or so bucks big time over years. Second as stated do the brakes, any car that has sat as long as yours will be due, and that would include the Master cylinder. Once you can stop it then you can worry about driving it. You will get a lot of help here and remember that there are no dumb questions.

Welcome to CT. I would second what 2blue52 said about the shop manual. Mine is so worn from using it so much in my two builds that I'm thinking of getting a replacement!

2Blu52 is mistaken! He's wrong! When you get the Shop Manual it will pay for itself big time in about 3 days!

Welcome to CT Justin. Ditto on posting pictures and dealing with possible stuck brakes. It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what to do. I love that you're keeping it basically stock. They are a lot more fun IMO if kept stock. Also ditto on filling out your signature so we can see what your car is like.

As promised... Here she is. The lock on the storage unit was rusted to the point the key wouldn't turn.


So the title says 1952 Bel Air and I'm no expert. I believe it would be more accurate to say Styleline Delux? I'll have to decode the Vin tonight. Ohh and I'm upating the profile.

Welcome to the best Chevrolet forum, and bunch of guys there is! We have all been exactly where you are, and it can be overwhelming, to say the least. Make a plan of attack, so to speak, and do one thing/project at a time. Your biggest advantage is "youth", as compared to a lot of us. A helper is one of the biggest assets to have; my nephew is mine, and only cost me giving him a car, virtually all the parts, a place to work on/store the car, and all the tools needed. We have completely rebuilt/replaced/updated everything on the car (1951 Chevrolet Business Coupe), and all that's really left to do is body work/paint, then redo the interior. But they're never really "done", are they? Our plan was "out with the old-in with the new", and I had almost everything stock piled for one of my tri-five projects. Since the plan was for a modified/hot rod/gasser type car, it was easier "building" the car than keeping the car stock. Another thing particular to your car, what would Grandpa wanted? I think that's an important part of the direction you take with the car. Good luck, and keep us up to date on the project. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Ohh I did... its now in my garage... This weekend I'm going to get her on casters and doing me some bearings or breaks... one of them anyway. It was a monster to get off the flat bed and into the garage.

I can't believe the knowledge here... and I'm very appreciative for all the feedback.

I've got some questions on the block and the head. The casting on the head reads 3836848 and the block is B53 848 350. My read of this that:
A - this is original OEM stuff
B - The block is a.... 53 ?
I really hope that its not a splasher. The rebuild on that is spendy... But wow - what is the block? I did spend some time on google without any luck.

I don't have the decoding off hand, but is the engine seized up?
YOu are on the right track though. Take a wheel at a time, It's most likely the brakes hanging up not letting the wheels turn. also check all the metal brake lines and if suspect, just replace them Not a terribly hard job to do.

That B53, where did you find that number?
If it was cast into the passenger side of the block, right behind where the starter would go, it's the date code which would bring up an interesting question. But first tell us where you found the B53.

The date code for the head is under the valve cover on the driver's side about half way back.
Like this:


The above date code (A 22 5) would be Jan. 22, 1965 since this head is an 848 head that wasn't being produced in 1955.

When I got my car it had broken brake return springs. Those can keep the wheels from turning all by themselves!

Thank you. So the casting was on the passenger side, and I knew better... but it was also some stuff on the head. (blame it on late nights in the office). But that isn't on the block...

I pulled the valve cover off and got some more info on the head. E27 3 was what I found.

I also noticed that the copper oil line that runs up over rockers has come mighty kinks in it. I'm pretty sure this isn't an optimal config.


I hope this works out to be good news. If the motor isn't a splasher, I don't need to track a more modern one down, as I have that. Heres to hope!

If anyone has any ideas on where to get a good buy on generators - let me know

On a side note - I needed to get some of my garage back, between the Chev and the Jeep it was pretty tight in there. I went with some wheel caster dolly things from horror freight. This car isn't light, at all. There is no "push and it goes here". Point the wheels in the direction you want to go and give a mighty heave(or 3, or 10)!

I plan to start pulling wheels tomorrow, I'll see what father time has brought me. Stay tuned...

Justin, the kinks are supposed to be there. According to this forum (search it) it helps restrict the oil flow to keep the valve train oiled. I'm sure not an expert and am in the same boat as you. Mine sat for about 15 years and the brakes were a mess. Also, one e brake cable was stuck. Good luck with the car.

I believe the pinched line is likely steel and most are pinched at this point. The looped portion is a return line sending oil to the sump. Rocker oiling was or would become insufficient and folks would pinch the return line to up the pressure and force as much oil out the rockers as possible.

It was freaky how much dust there was. She took a -long- nap (I think it was 12 years). One thing that was kind of fun - when I opened the door to the unit, I could smell her and had a huge moment of nostalgia. Time to get serious about making her mobile again! I ordered a replacement gas tank today, step one anyway. I know its a long shot, but I hope to drive her a little in the summer. It's kind of odd - I remember back in the day there were running 235 motors around, now its not so much.

It's really amazing the knowledge around here, I'm thrilled to be here.

I haven't been able to get the longer casting number off the block yet - but I did get this off the block where the start motor sits. I need to get something more effective then windex to get that gunk off to get the numbers....

CON <V> 4. I'm not sure if its an actual -v- or just grease/gunk/etc. But its consistent with what I found on the head. After that and closer to the distributor "E 229". I sure hope this indicates a newer block. I'd love to keep it the same (not to mention the cost of rebuilding early motor).

The "Con 1-2-3-4" etc numbers were a mystery for many years until some old CT member (not sure who) remembered it stood for Conveyer 1-2-3-4. So your block was cast on Conveyer #4, on May 22, 1959. It's definitely a not a dipper engine.

Mine was cast on May 15, 1959 on Conveyer #2, so we are practically neighbors!

At first I put a Cliffords side cover on it and that one was complete crap. It was wavy, thin, and hadn't even been sanded or polished. It was just a gray casting fresh from the foundry. And the crazy part was it was the same price as the Wayne, which I got from Patricks. Besides being ground flat and polished, the Wayne was also twice as heavy as the Cliffords cover. I guess most guys caught on because Cliffords no longer sells either their valve cover or the side cover.

Lots of stuff happening. Found a guy who is selling a complete rebuilt 216 engine. Includes generator, and voltage regulator. He wants 1k for it. He was going to use it for his own project but decided to drop in a 350. I'm very tempted. I trust the guy - hes owns his own shop, and has a solid reputation. Problem for me is, its now the 235. What are your thoughts?

I redid the brakes yesterday. Getting that drum off was a PITA!!! Wow. I also did break lines. I want to rebuild the mater cylinder - but ran out of time. I'm terrified of the break lines - the fittings are so frozen onto the lnes - I can myself twisting them off the pipe.

I'm pulling the motor out next weekend, and will do the engine bay nice. After that - She is off to the body shop for paint (once I decide on the lucky person to get Beatrice).

Ohh anyone ever do business with ciadella interiors? I'm really tempted. I also really like lebaron bonney... Anyone have experience doing the install? It's a big job, and I've never done this part before.

Thought I would post some progress...
Pulled the engine and front clip. I'm currently working on the mechanical stuff.
1) Pull front clip off (check)
2) Remove Engine (check)
3) Rebuild Master Break Cyl (inprocess)
4) Replace the old nasty rubber break lines (inprocess)
5) Rebuild the break wheel cyl
6) Degrease the engine bay (inprocess)
7) Paint engine bay nice and pretty
8) Transplant new engine



Its amazing how fast these cars come apart...



Dave a friend of mine was nice enough to bring his son over and help with pulling the engine (as well as some other issues that came up). This guy is the MAN! Thanks Dave!!

This rust on the roof literally has kept me up night. I've been terrified that it had rusted through over the long sleep in the storage unit. The guy who helped me paint this years ago wasn't what you would call a pro. This is the rust spot, complete with bubbling and cracking. I think this is why preparation for painting is so important

I couldn't take the mystery of what was hiding under there... So I went at it.

Well I'm pretty sure that the breaks will get sorted out in the next little while. I think this weekend. I hope.

I just re-read from the first post to bring myself back to speed. I love the history of your car. Is the motor toast or just not running? I might be tempted to try to get it started so you could drive it this Sumer while you wait for a new one.

I pulled a working 216 out of my 49 and bought a 235 that needed to be rebuilt...the rebuild cost more than expected. To do it again, I would try to find a rebuilt 236 or better yet a 261. You could check Inliners.org. They have a classified and you can sometimes fine a rebuilt engine for less $$ than you would spend doing it yourself.

Don't fear the break lines. You can get pre-flared lines with new fittings. Or you can buy a good flare tool and make your own. I did it and I don't have near the credentials that you do!

Went through the breaks, since the engine was at the machine shop. I had a frozen brake drum, and after a few hours of trying to pry it off, hitting it with a shot hammer - slowly I came to the realization it just wasn't going to be a casual affair.

I rigged this to create some outward tension on the drum... and smacked the crap out of it again. It broke free just before the 2x4 which was starting to split apart. I took a pic of the bent bolts.. just for fun. If I were to build this again - a slit is better idea then a large hole for the arms. Fyi - I think this is about the best and only use for a harbor freight gear puller.

While waiting on the machine shop and forthcoming engine, I have started the dash. I sprung the passenger door years ago and it never closed right after, and there is some rust. So its off!



Going to rewrire the whole car... and paint the dash and firewall next weekend, I hope.

That broken wheel puller reminded me of one of my first times working on one of these fifties chevies. Hubby was working 56 hours a week at boeing so we had no time to work on our 57 chevy truck. One day I decided to do the brakes myself so I could drive it. (We had it delivered by the guy we bought it from....he drove it there with no brakes.....crazy. This was in 1991) He told me the drum should come right off with a wheel puller. I put it on and kept going and it never came off. I about turned that drum inside out. He told me to just keep going it would come off (on the phone on his lunch break).....well it turns out the drivers side drum was riveted somehow on the 57 truck and it didn't come off with a wheel puller. We had to go find a drum...which turned in to meeting one of the coolest old dudes ever and he had acres and acres of old chevy truck parts.....So it was a great lesson all the way around. You should have seen hubby's face when he saw the drum, though. He couldn't believe I could bend it like that....and that I kept going.....but I got that sucker off.....lol. Oops.

Yours is coming along....keep plugging away. It will be on the road someday. Best to take your time and do a good job.

I had to destroy the drums on the original rear-end that was under my car when I first got it. Had to use a cold-chisel all around the axle and stud area, and tear them suckers apart piece by piece.

My 52 Bel Air has that same head too, 3836848 and the adaptor for the temp sender. The other codes he gave you are on the other side of the head above and between 2 and 3 spark-plug.
Mine says B49 then 848 but it says 850 not 350 directly below the 848. Do we both have replacement heads? Also my block casting number is 3835911 which comes up as 53-55 235, supposedly for a first series 54 pickup.
I notice both our cars have the tall turret like engine mounts, and I understand this was only done for a short time and not on all models?
Any thoughts on what we have? Clive

I made a mistake when I put different 235 in my 51 , I didn't think about tranny my 3 speed jumps out 2nd gear .now I have to take it out again when I changed motor it was already out . I'll put new bearing & seals for sure , that should have been a given . Good luck Dig from MN.

Been away for so long.
I hear you on the turret engine mounts - I really don't know, but I really like it.

Just wanted to post an update after being away.

I gave up on the guy who was to do the body and paint - My wife finished school and moved back and the car needed to a new home. So... rather than store it, I found a new shop.

It is now being worked on, and hopefully things go well. I am going to have it done right. I will post updates. The current goal is to have it on the road in spring time.

Things are moving very well!

My father, (not so little) girl, and father at the shop. Crazy to think her Great Grandfather drove the car. After having it to date almost 26 years and always wanting to restore it to it's former glory it's hard to understate how exciting this is.
