I have a '57 3200 I would like to put power steering in.

Can anyone give me some information on this kit?

The CPP site lists no details or price for it.

This is all that is listed:
1955-59, with CPP 400 Series™ box, kit Part# CPP5559PSK-OC

I'd like to know the price and about installation details. Does it mount inside the frame in place of the stock box?

Is this a better alternative than the later model pickup Saginaw box conversion that mounts on the outside of the frame?

Also, is it a better alternative than the Toyota box conversion?

Help or guidance would be appreciated.

Hello,

This kit is still in the works. Currently we still sell the Toyota kit. One main reason this kit is being made is the lack of toyota cores. This setup is still about 60+ days out I think. Pricing should be in the same lines as the Toyota kit.

The toyota kit is very simalar mounting like the stock box (inner part of the rail).

This and the Toyota are both good choices.

The GM type steering box that mounts on the outside of the rail works well but does limit tire width and is more components to hook up the column since you have to go from inside to outside of the rail.

Thanks,

Thanks Aaron,

60 days is no problem with me. I'm not ready for it quite yet anyway.

Is the CPP400/Toyota kit better for drivability than the GM outside frame rail is?

I've read some comments that the GM box is prone to bump steer and steers too easy for an original steering wheel. I do want to stay with the original steering wheel for the classic look. I will most likely be going for an aftermarket shift column since I'm putting a 700R4 in the truck. I'm looking at the Ididit.

And btw, I don't see the price for the Toyota conversion kit on your site. Can you give me what that price is?
I will not need a power steering pump. There is already a pump on the TPI engine I'm putting in it.

$699 for the toyota kit (no pump included) and $169.00 for the correct universal double U-joint

All straight axle conversions are prone to the same bump steer the factory truck has; this gets worse as the truck is lowered. One of the big advantages the 400 and the toyota have is since the steering box is on the inside of the rail, the turning radious is better and a wider wheel is possible without interferance.

Oh, another question.
The photo of the kit with the new 400 box shows that it comes with a rag joint.
Does this mean that the new kit won't need the double U-Joint making the new kit $169 cheaper than going with the Toyota box kit?

Thats correct; with the 400 series its in the exact same spot so a rag joint can be used.

Thanks Aaron! I'd rather have a rag joint for less steering wheel vibrations and of course save the money.

So, that covers it for now.
Sounds like a no-brainer decision for me. I will wait for you to get your new kit with the 400 box ready and go for it.

Aaron, just to pick up on this thread: What modifications to the column would be required with this new 400 PS gear?

I'm bumping this since there hasn't been a reply from Aaron on Jalapeno's question.

Btw, I have already got an Ididit that I'm going to use.

I hope the 400 box is still on schedule.

For the rag joint like a 55-57 car will require cutting the inner shaft and fitting it for a rag joint. Simple modifification for this and should not be a problem.

You think CPP will offer a new shaft, like what is made for the 55-57 car and 500 gear?

It's been about 60 days now.

Any updates on the time of availability of the 400 box kit?

I see you are shipping the 400 box for other applications.

I just got an email about a 10% off sale.

Any chance that 55-59 pickup 400 box kit is ready and I can order and take advantage of the 10% off?

I see the sale is good through Monday. I guess I can call and find out of you don't respond here by that time.

Aaron,
I've been doing that.
It hasn't been updated since November. It just says "inquire".

Is there an updated estimate for availability?

I've got 300 miles on my truck now since completing the project.

The 400 box feels and steers great!

Only thing to be aware of is when using an Ididit column kit and you want to use a '55 or '56 original steering wheel. They won't work without an extension.
Works fine with a '57 thru '59 stock steering wheel. In fact, it's really good because the wheel is as close to the dash as it can get. Right where you want it to be.

With 400 CPP steering box install, what exhaust manifolds did you use? I have 57 3100 with 283 that I am going to convert.
