I removed, disassebled, cleaned, oiled and reassembled them. They seem to have survived the grit. However, they do not look anything like the ones in my shop manual. No ball and ball retainer, rather a metal stamping containing a small spring and flat washer creating a check valve. Their is a single hole in the plunger which is found in a relief groove. My question is, how do you preload the new stlye lifters after you have taken them apart. I tried initally to preload the body, before I replaced the plunger, but then could not push the plunger down far enough to get the retainer back on.

What I have done is after they are together I put them in a can of oil so they are submerged and then take a push rod and work the plunger up and down which will pump in some oil. They will not get rock hard but at least there will be some oil in them.
