Hi, im new to this forum, i used to be most at the jeep forums, but i recently bought a scout ii with a sbc350/th350 and have an issue with the trany so a friend gave me a link to this forum, long story short, i bought the scout as a not running because there was no transfer case installed, so i installed the trasnfer case, put fluid in the th350 (was almost dry, it had about 2qt), started the car and let it idle about 10 min, then when i shift to 1st i need press some the gas so gear can engage, and when 1st gear comes in it hits/hammers really hard, same think with the reverse, im thinkin this weekend on turn some the vacuum modulator screw and see what happens, anything else i could/should check??

The car was parked about half year, due to a transfer case problem, before that the car was running fine..

Lot of thanks for all ur replies

Welcome to the site.
The 350TH has a detent cable that attaches to the carb. Is it attached properly? Does is move without binding? Do you know to how to set the cable? What does the oil pan look like? Is it square with a corner cut off? Or does look like an island with different sides?

Adjust the cable by this method: http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain /detent....

Check the governor. Broken gears on the govenor affect shifting.

make sure that all your vacuum lines are on right. I had an 84 k10 with a TH350 and after doing a tune up on the engine i pulled it out of the garage and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't shift out of first. So i pulled it back in and checked the detent cable and finally i crawled under and followed the vacuum hose back to the motor and it turns out i knocked it off when changing the plugs. after i reattached it the truck shifted fine

Sounds like the seals in the clutch packs have gotten "hard". Does it slam into gear after the trans is warmed up? Might try a can of "Trans Medic", or a similar product; these basically permiate the seals with chemicals that make them soft and pliable again. However, it's usually just a temporary fix; if it fixes the problem, you've isolated what needs to be done............rebuild/reseal time. Butch/567sedandelivery.
