84 up columns have different wiring. The high beam switch was moved from the floorboard to wiper switch. 83 and older don't have a highbeam switch. Any column out of a truck, suburban, Jimmy, and Blazer will fit.

You may even fit a 88+ column to 95. I think you do have to make a few small changes to make them fit. In 96, airbags became standard.

The high beam switch is separate from the rest of the wiring on the column - so no wiring changes are necessary. The high beam connector is also exactly the same from the floor mounted switch to the steering column, all you have to do is re-route the high beam wiring to the steering column.

Virtually any steering column from any GM full size car or truck (73-87) will bolt in place of your steering column. You may have to use your double-D shaft in place of the donor column. All the wiring will plug into place. This also applies to the tilt and tilt/telescope columns.

I have swapped a couple of columns (including the 84+) into trucks without issue. I have also swapped a Cadillac tilt/telescope column into a 66 with some fabrication.

The '84+ columns will also have the wiper switch made into the cruise/turn signal lever.

So for ease of installation, I would stick to a 1983 & older column...
