I'm getting so close to being done, it's scary. New tires mounted today. It took way too long because they mounted the white letters out the first time despite me clearly saying "black walls out". 235/60R15s on front, 275/60R15s on the back. I polished the rims, starting with 36 grit(!) to get rid of the dings on the lip and then I moved up to 80, 180, 240, 320, 400 and 600. I then moved to the buffing wheel and then Mother's mag polish on a polishing cone. I painted the centers of the ribs with Plastikote's rebuilders cast Gray.
This is what I started with after cleaning with Eagle one cleaner.

Polished, but unpainted.

That is one beautful ride. I'd only make one suggestion... clear coat those awesome rims and you won't have to clean them up again too soon.

Anyone have experience clear coating aluminum? I thought about it but I when I spoke with the guy at the paint shop, he said ppg has a process of washes and adhesion preps necessary before clearing - sounds $. How about a sealant of some kind? I know mothers makes some kind of Tech Wax that guys have used and guys with real magnesium rims swear by Gibbs Brand Penetrant.

all of the rims that I have had clear coated were failures. The clear will eventually be chipped off at one point then water will seep in under the clear and cause it to oxide under the clear near the chip. the clear keeps the water in once comprimised.
I would recommend just cleaning them well after use.

The problem with aluminum is that when you stop polishing it, it's already re-oxidizing again. The minute or two that you wait before coating, can be too long for the coating to adhere. The longer you wait, the worse it gets.
I have the DuPont aluminum prep solutions (two part) downstairs. One is a cleaner, the second is a surface hardener (phosphoric acid). It is a similar to alodizing (not anodizing). Then you can paint away!

I guess the rims on my daughter's car aren't old enough yet. I painted them last year because she didn't wash the wheels often enough & the 4-wheel disc brakes did a number on the finish.

I am somewhat confused how the brakes do a number on the finish? Each time I had problems, it was from rocks or other materials messing the finish up and not brake dust. My dust always washes off. Can brake dust be that harmful?

Leon,
Somehow I've ALWAYS had issues with brake pad dust eating through the paint, or coroding the dickens out of my rims... maybe I'm just special that way.

Ever since I started putting ceramic pads on my cars I've never had the brake pad dust problem associated with attacking the finish on aluminum wheels. They stay nice and clean all the time. Just thought I'd mention that in case you were not aware. However, they may not be available for your stock brake system(s).

Good to hear about the ceramic brake pads. My front disks leave a mess on the rims, so I bought some ceramic pads to see if it solves the problem. Glad to know that I'm on the right track.
