I purchased a 1953 235 several years ago, because it was full pressure and still used the acorn nuts on top. Now that I have both engines side by side, I am finding that the blocks are not exactly the same as I had been lead to believe. Here is my first few questions. Will my 50 Powerglide bell housing bolt up O.K.? Second question, the front motor bracked which holds the timing cover does not have front motor mount holes in it. Is it the same shape exept for the holes. I could drill holes and add the reinforcement and weld them on, or I could take the one off the 50 engine and swap them if they will fit. Will the 50 plate fit on the 53 block? I of course can try this, but could save myself a lot of time, if they won't work.

I came across this issue when I wanted to swap a '60 235 block into my '50 tin woodie. I chose to solve it by swapping the front plate on the engine block to the one with the side mounts. I also drilled and tapped the block so I could remove the timing chain cover from the front without having to drop the pan. I was surprised to hear that the mounts were different between the PG and non-pg engines. Since I have to fab up a PG cross member for my formerly non-pg car, I guess I can take care of the 1/8" difference with positioning of the rear tranny mount.
Some folks here have just drilled new holes in the front plate and switched to the side mounts. Some added reinforcement and some did not, but I haven't heard of anyone having problems with either approach.
Good luck with yours.

The "blocks" are the same in regard to mating to bellhousings. I swapped a 62 235 into my 51 years ago by simply drilling the mounting holes into the newer bracket.

Thanks for the feed back, I think I am going to drill the holes and weld in the renforcements as I have the equipment to do so. Seems like less work then changing the plates from one engine to the other.
