On my 1963 Impala someone removed the stock radio its empty not sure why anyone would do that on to my question.
When I got the car bout a year back came with aftermarket Alpine I say late 90's model, mounted under the dash. I took out the Alpine and put the Kenwood I had from another car. I undid wire by wire ran each the same way as the set up seemed to work. I did that months ago tonight I was driving around the Radio kept saying Protect on it.
Upon driving home I check the wires and smoke started filling up the car and wire caught fire. I put it out and checked it seemed like it was ground wire off to the left mounted to the car inside. It was dark and late did not have a chance to see what happened. I checked the radio off the battery still good. Took the cables off the battery till I can see what happened..
2 part question
1 What would cause this without looking probally no fuse and it was run straight to the battery?
2 What is the proper way to install a radio that doesn't have a factory harness Ive installed so many radios no problems but usually had factory harness and easy set up from there.
Again it was late got lucky this happened in the drive way and not cruising any advice be great.. Thanks everyone

Sorry to hear your troubles.
1.Sounds like the power wire got grounded out somehow. Always run fuses to the Red and Yellow wires.
2.When hooking up a radio without factory harness

For some reason I had taped the ground and power wires into a bundle under the dash. Puff of smoke, big sizzle. Fortunately the radio fuse shut everything down and protected the radio. Now the run far from each other.

You guys run a power wire straight to the battery than? Put a fuse on it? Than where do you run the ground?

I looked the ground was off to the left on a screw on the driver side.
The main power was coming from the cigeratte lighter they must must taped into the wire but it was done correct gets 12 volts.
The other wire is brown wire also taped in correct way under the dash not sure what the brown wire is for? Must be acc??
What about a toggle switch on the radio turn it off and so its not always on,and I dont have to turn it off on the unit?

You can hook both the constant 12v and switch 12v from the fuse box. Yellow wire to the (BAT.) plug and Red to the (FUSED-IGN.) plug.

Female connector, usually with a blue cover. Auto Parts places and Radio Shack have them. Fits tightly over the male connector. 14 Gauge works fine.

The protect mode means u need to enter a 4digit code to unlock the unit happens usually after its lost constant power,a theft feature for the unit. Also it could means theres still a wiring issue or lastly something is wrong internally with the radio. Is there a little reset button on the face or behind it,try pushing it and see if it corrects it.

Check all speaker wires and rca wires if you have an amp and make sure none of the wires are pinched.
or unplug all the speaker wires from the head unit, drive it for a bit to see if it happens. If no protection comes on then you know its one of the speaker wires.

Sic 63 is correct. If any of the speakers are blown it wires pinched and grounding out, that will cut out most radios. Hope that fixes your problem.
