Fellas,
I need to remove the rear shackle perches on my 51', so total of eight rivets. I managed to get one side off, but those rivets put up a fight. Does anyone have tips or a secret?
I grind off the head, drill a small hole and start hammering away using a drift punch. Is another way?

I found if I used a cut off wheel first to get most of the head off, then hit it with the grinder.

I borrowed an air/impact gun from a friend that owns his own repair shop. He had a chisel bit and a punch bit. Worked like a champ to remove the 18 rivets holding the transmission x-member in place on my car.

I just finished this project,
and I feel for you pal.
I used a cutting disc to slice a slot in the rivet head, and air chisel easily cut the heads off.
A cleanup with a grinder.
I drilled a small hole and then used a titanium
"step drill" to enlarge it. (do not drill through ).
A punch on an air chisel pushed them out.
The work will be worth it, stay strong.

sounds like, there is no short cut to removing these things. who ever designed these cars, designed them to last!

They were designed to last ... that is why we can still work on them today, 60 years after leaving the assembly line.
Can't say that for the Citation or Vega ... not too many left to be worked on !

I miss my Citation
I hit the head with the grinder until it's flush, then air chisel them out. I've done more than a few on this car that way.

Fellas, Newbee with a question on the rivits. Once that you have removed the rivit/bracket, what are you using to reattach it? I have been refraining from removing mine because I havent found any replacement rivits. Thanks

Why are you removing your if you are just going to reattach them?

Some of them are rusted (deformed) after clean up. I have concerns about strength.

50chev,
Simply replace the failed rivets (or those you are concerned about) with the same diameter grade8 bolt.

I couldn't imagine doing ANYTHING on my '51 without a compressor and a suite of air tools. Put that on the top of your christmas wish list!
