I had a fun day. I decided after getting the engine running last week to reattach the radiator with new hoses, add coolant, and run the engine a few minutes longer to get the oil circulating so I could do a few oil changes. I want to start out with thanking Bob Hayden for walking me through some tests over the phone again.
First, we unhooked the oil gauge at the engine and cranked it with no spark to make sure the oil pump worked. CHECK! Then we reattaced gauge tube and coil wire and removed valve cover. I taught my wife how to start the car and I checked for oil flow from the rockers. CHECK!
Next I went to the store and got new hoses, radiator hose grease, and antifreeze. I enjoyed a pleasant rain (3rd time this week!) from the porch while I cut the new hoses. Hooked 'em up when the weather stopped. Just for the time being until I get my new alternator, I hooked up my old generator (JUST TO ACT AS A SPACER FOR THE OLD BELT--IT'S NOT WIRED UP!!!!!!!!!!) I set the belt tension per the shop manual, hooked up my gas can, powered up the car, and ran it for a few minutes.
After a few minutes, I noticed antifreeze misting off the belt which eventually became a steady stream! I learned lots of great things from Bob today and had a lot of fun doing them, but it appears that the bushing or seal around my pulley shaft in the water pump is shot. It began leaking from under the pulley like a seave.
The good news is that all my hoses are nice and tight and even my temporary cardboard gasket I made for the water outlet doesn't leak! In a few weeks we hope to tow the car to school and have the automotive teacher and class build new fuel lines and install a new gas tank, rebuild the brakes and master cylinder, rebuild the carburetor, and change the water pump and some gaskets. Hopefully I'll be able to get plates and take it for a drive in October or November.
I can't wait!
Is it possible to change the bushing or seal on that pulley shaft or should I just get a new water pump?

Thanks guys! This next week is a real "catch 22". I love working on the car and learning how everything ticks, but I'm a school teacher and we go back Monday. So, I can either keep the car at home and maybe do one little project a month and not get to drive it until next summer, or I can take it to school and have the auto class do a lot of it and maybe drive it before the snow flies. Here's a thought; maybe I should keep it at home until late November, tow it to school and have them do work over the winter since I won't take it out then, AND it will have a roof over it's head when it snows. (I don't have a garage.)
Oh well. I'll figure something out.

Tim, think back a little. I remember when you said "school is out now and I can work on the car." If I'm not mistaken you've got a lot done. this sumer. I think Mike is right, just a pause.

Tim, I would get a new water pump and keep it at home for a while and drive it some. And start making a list of the things the class can do. then take it to school when the weather starts acting up (inside for the winter, cheap labor, tools and lift probably) Can you work a deal to have access to the shop after hours , weekends, and days off-I would have made that deal in an instant when in the first stages of working on my cars!
Come to think of it, maybe the class would like to learn how to wet sand! I have a car that could use lots of cheap labor!

Just purchase a new pump. They are reasonably priced and can be obtained at least on an overnight basis from most parts houses. NAPA had one in stock. Sounds as if you are keeping som ekind of schedule and will be driving the beast in short order. To check oil flow I remove the distributor, use a cut off flat screwdirver shaft inserted in the oil pump and run it with a 3/8 " electric drill. I have a spare engine on a stand and do this a couple of times a year and then rotate the crank by hand after oiling down the cylinders.

Thanks for the great advice everyone. If it's ok with the auto teacher's schedule, I may just do that...take it up over the winter. I guess the water pump isn't the end of the world. It was just a bummer to get antifreeze all over everything that had looked nice and shiny a few minutes earlier.
I'm not sure about after hour and weekend access to the garage. I have a key that may work, but liability concerns could override that. In answer to 2Blu52, Bob actually mentioned that cut off screw driver and drill under the distributor trick, but told me the other way too since I was afraid I wouldn't get the distributor back in right, lol.
I'll talk to the local stores about that water pump. How would I go about testing the thermostat inside the return outlet? Do I just make sure it isn't frozen? That's all I saw in the shop manual.

Thermostats are cheap, but if you want to test one, put a pan of water on the stove, read the temperature range of the thermostat of the face of it and place it in the water, turn on the stove and borrow the wifes candy thermometer, if the thermostat is working it should start to open at a temp slightly lower than the temp shown on the face of and fully open when it hits its designed heat range.

Thanks Bill! You are too kind! I'll email you so we can figure out a way for me to pay the shipping!
And, thanks 2Blu for the help on the thermostat! What a clever way to look at it and see if it works! Awesome!
I just got done cleaning up my "shop" (which is my basement) so I can start prioritizing whatever comes next. I basically have everything in separate stacks all around the perimeter.
The stacks: Heater and ducts I plan to rebuild this winter, bumpers/chrome, stainless, interior mouldings (metal), upholstery panels, backseat, and misc. I boxed up all the old junk that I no longer need as well.
I don't know why, but I feel compelled to save everything "for reference", even rusty nuts and bolts that I've already found perfect matches for...:)

I tried to rebuild my water pump and the problem I had was locating the bearings. I didn't try to locate a seal, but since seals are standard items, it shouldn't be that hard. (BTW, I didn't try very hard to locate the bearings either--I'm sure I could have ordered them from a bearing house, or even NAPA.

Yeah, I'm already in over my head. Parts coming off engines with gears that have to line up upon return scares me. I've heard horror stories about installing the fuel pump too! My brother in law was a pretty good mechanic and he didn't even like doing those. He said his boss had some sort of trick where he packed something with heavy grease in order to act as a third set of hands to hold up the "finger" (linkage, armature--not sure what it's called) as it went back in. It all sounds like "lock picking" or "safe cracking" to me, lol.

Fuel pumps not hard to put on at all. Just remember to tighten the bolts evenly so you don't break an ear off. Hardest part for me now would being able to breath while reaching over the fender to get down in there to it!!! LOL LOL

Your brother in law was probably working with a V-8, fuel pump installation on the 216 inline 6 is far different. Two fuel connections and two bolts,Shazaam it is off. to install just reverse, however you may want to place a finger in the hole in the block, and by HAND rotate the engine until you feel the high spot on the cam move out of reach. Then install the pump moving the lobe on the cam means you do not have to install the pump against the pressure of the pump lever riding on the high spot of the cam. As along as you are doing that consider placing an inline filter between the fuel tank and the pump.

Well, I finally got an evening after school to put on that nice donor water pump that one4dad sent me! It is nice and tight with no leaks! Many thanks one4dad! Just email me and let me know how much I owe you for shipping. Me and my neighbor worked until dark, so I flipped on the parking lights so we could see while the engine ran. And that's when we noticed...my passenger side parking lens is half full of WATER from the good rains we got last week. UGH...it's another THREE STEPS FORWARD AND TWO STEPS BACK, LOL!! I spent about 6-8 hours rebuilding those foolish canisters with new gaskets, nuts, bolts, and lock washers. I even "made" a tiny 7/16 wrench that would fit inside the cannister to tighten those down! Now I have to pull the grill again and take it back down in the "workshop" for a few days. Oh well, I have a fully functional cooling system! The car runs nice; we ran it for about 10 minutes. It sounds like its "missing" every once in a while, but not bad. I know it needs a carburetor rebuild next. Then we'll go over the brake system, get a new gas tank, find a good alternator, make the new bracket, get insurance and plates, and she should be able to make it around the block!
