My power steering squeals, especially right after startup. It is the same sound as when you get to full left/right lock and can't turn anymore, but it happens throughout. You could be driving straight, turn the wheel a bit, and the sound is there. I can confirm that it is not a loose belt.
It does tone down a bit, and is less frequent, after the car is driven awhile. I also have a small leak that looks to be coming from one of the hoses.
Is this a bad pump, steering box, or maybe just air getting into the line from the leak? My guess is the pump, but I would like to diagnose before I just start replacing "stuff"...
Thanks for the help

Having never heard a bad pump squeal, I would suggest making sure the belt is not squealing by watching it when someone is turning the wheel.
A relief valve on the pump will make a noise but not what I would describe as "squealing".

I only use Dayco Top Cog v-belts after having squeeling problems with other brands.

Jeff,
By your description, I'm almost certain its a belt situation. I would try to tighten it a bit, to see if that helps. As suggested, a new belt might also do the trick.

You have just described my situation.....new fast steering box, new pump & a new properly adjusted belt.
Belt came from Advanced auot parts.

Once a v-belt slips, it glazes (heats up and hardens) the side of the belt and will continue to slip no matter how tight it is pulled. Remove the belt and sand or clean the inner pulley surface. I would replace the belt but you could sand the sides of the V part as the engine is running. Be careful not to chop you finger off.

Hey Jim,
I'll double check that the belt is not slipping before I do anything else...
Thanks.

I've done that "sand the belt while the engine is running" trick and it really does work but proceed at your own risk. Also I agree with Aaron on the Dayco Top Cog belts, best I've ever used.

In the same boat here too. All new stuff, belt too. Just can't get rid of that noise. Mine is more of a metal on metal grinding squeal. Thought it was internal parts in the pump so I sent it back and they claimed they repaired it but didn't tell me what it was that was repaired. Put it back on and same grinding noise. Out of frustration I revved the motor hard a few times and it went away briefly but as I turned the wheel it came back. As loud as mine is I doubt it's my belt. I'm thinking its an air pocket situation.

Well, not suprisingly, you guys were right. It was the belt. It was a lot looser than I remember it was when I installed it...
...anyway I got several new belt in multiple smaller sizes and put on the one that fit the best. I ended up removing one of the PS mounting bolts to install the smallest belt I could.
Now I have some room to tighten it over time.
Thanks for the heads up.

I'm glad you got it taken care of. I recently had a situation where the p/s would squeal right after start up. I had a brand new Dayco belt and it was properly adjusted. The problem ended up being that all of the p/s pump mounting bracket bolts were not absolutely tight. There was just enough movement to cause a problem. Once I got all the bolts good and tight the noise disappeared.

new belts stretch after they are run a little, so you always should recheck them after a day or two. Also, while on the subject....when you run into a squealing belt that is tight look carefully at how the belt sits in the groove of the pulley. I've had some that people had run loose for so long that it wore out the groove in the pulley and the belt was bottoming out in the groove. Didn't matter how tight you got it it would still slip. A good sign you have a worn out pulley is if the top of the belt is below the outer edge of the pulley.

Seems like they stretch but they don't. Sides wear in to the pulley and sink a little on both ends and have to be tightened little.
