hi, new to the forum and a new 63 impala ss owner, so i hope i can find some information to help me install the remote power trunk pop plunger i've bought. i've studied the lock and the latch and i don't see where i can attach the plunger cable to pull the lock mechanism open. if anyone here knows how to do this, short of pulling/shaving the lock off, i'd sure appreciate your help.
thanks

you need to purchase a accessory installation manual.(1963) Shows pictures on how to install.

The 63 trunk opener was vacuum operated, he's talking about a plunger cable which Sounds like an aftermarket item.

yes, i'm talking about an aftermarket solenoid to unlock the trunk that works with my alarm system. i wasn't aware that it even had a vacuum release in 63. i guess i haven't read both the 61 and 63 repair manuals that i have yet enough to have caught that option.
does anyone know if it's possible to add this electric aftermarket trunk release/popper/solenoid to my 63 and still keep the oem trunk lock intact as you'd do with the power door lock solenoids?
thanks for any help on this project.

Post a picture of what you have and maybe we can get a better idea of how to install it.

i'm sorry, but i tried posting it. this interface doesn't seem to allow pasting and i don't have a picture of the unit posted on the web, but it's a pretty common solenoid with a pull cable on it. i just need a way to tie into the latch mech but unlike modern cars that use cables between the lock and mech, where you'd attach this solenoid, i can't see any way to trip the mechanism except breaking the original lock.

I know what you have, and it will not work with the old truck mechanism. The vacuum operated ones have a tang that is insterted into the lock that twists the lock mechanism, like the key does, and releases the lock mechanism. It is called Automatic Trunk Opener, and is part number 985505. The were common to most of the GM models of that vintage.

thank you very much sir. maybe i can find the original part then and get it to work. i figured i could break the linkage between the lock and the latch and put some sort of bar on it to open the latch but it would mean that the original lock wouldn't work. thanks again.

im in the process of doing this install now. i attched the cable around the lock rod towords the top and tightened it so it would "pull" it the way it goes when the selinoid pops. its barely working though. im gonna need to put some sort of "t" in there to do it. when i figure it out i send a pic if possible

well sir, if you figure out a way to add the universal trunk pop solenoid without interfering with the operation of the trunk lock, i'd be very interested to know how you do it. thanks much to everyone who replied on this thread for your help.
i'm sure i'll have many more questions once i figure out enough to ask them.
