I have a 56 BelAir with Power disk brakes. I had the car parked up hill yesterday. When I backed down, the rear end was high and when I got back level on the road, my brake pedal went to the floor and no brakes. I kept pumping the pedal and the brakes returned to normal? Brake fluid does not appear low, but could use a really small top up. Any ideas on why this would happen or if this is indicative of a more serious problem?

Thank you

I think your master cylinder croaked. You have brakes when you pump them up, but they fail when you step on them.

I don't feel safe driving it anymore, so I think you are right - I am going to book it in for a complete inspection.

Thanks so much.

Good idea. My brakes(master cyl) died during the winter and the brakes reacted just as you described. Master was leaking between the MC and booster.
