Hello,

I am fairly new to this site and this is my first posting. I have a 1959 impala 2 door hardtop that I have had for severl years. I have not driven the car in a while and started to fire it up again recently. I wanted to know on the temperature guage where the needle should be when driving the car. It seems to stay about in the middle of the guage and I was not sure it that was too hot or not. It has a 283 four barrel stock motor with a four core radiator for the factory a/c system. I have not been running the a/c on the car. I have also checked the radiator and it does not seem like there is any circulation in the water when the car is running. I drained the coolant and it was still green with so sludge or dirt in the radiator. I don't think there are any clogged tubes. There are no leakes on the water pump, but when I grab the top radiator hose going into the manifold I dont feel and water running. I was not sure if that is normal. Any info would be great.

Karl

Karl, Guage needle should be slightlyto the left of the 12:00 position after attaining running temp.

I agree, I have a 348 and mine is consistantly slightly to the left of the 12 o'clock, unless sitting at idle for a very long time, or driving in a parade

I ran the car yesterday and set it in park and let it run for about 20 - 30 minutes and it stayed fairly consistant at around the 12 o'clock mark. I will have to check again while driving the car if it is more to the left. Sounds like it is where it needs to be.

My needle stayed about 11:00 on the gauge -even the other day when the temp was above 90 in Buffalo NY!

It has been about 105 here in Las Vegas, NV. I figured it may be a little warmer due to the weather.

When I took the radiator cap off the radiator and ran the car the water looks like it is sitting still. Is it supposed to run like a river or be circulating around? I was wondering if my water pump is bad. It does not leak or make any noises. I just don't see any circulating water at all

Swap your water pump and check your engine timing, my car ran hot due to timing.

Swap your thermostat, maybe you dont see water circulation due to the thermostat being closed or not working properly.

Gauges are not always very accurate, and if it's not overheating, ie. boiling over, don't worry about it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Check the temp with an IR sensor.

Lots of posts here about overheating if you do a search.
