Hi,

I have installed a TH700-R4 transmission in my 1966 Impala and noticed that i almost can't push the car backwards by hand, even on concrete and in neutral.

The transmission was said to be overhauled when i bought it.
Since my car is not yet finished (state as in image below) i haven't driven it to much, just been humming around on my land, but it does drive forward and backward without any problems.

Is it normal that is should be so heavy to push backwards?

I know that a Chevy never stops so that it needs pushing!
But sometimes i just want to move it slightly in the shop while working.

Thanks

First thing I would do is jack it up and put it on stands and determine if the wheels roll free.

Could be that one or more of your breaks are grabbing. By checking each wheel individually, you can focus in on the issue.
In neutral, the rear wheels should spin freely as well, and depending on if you have a posi or not, they will either turn together or turn in opposite directions (no posi).

On jack stands you can see if you have a clutch pack transmitting some torque even in neutral. Pressure port test will help determine if it's a hydraulic problem or mechanical such as a stuck clutch piston or wave spring problem. When I blew the snap ring on the regulator I lost reverse and the tranny wanted to go forward a little even in neutral. With the boost valves moving toward the pan I'm surprised I even got home.

Tomme,
I have a 700r4 in my '65 and I have no problem pushing it backwards when in neutral. If a brake is grabbing, you should hear it.

Your car looks great! What size rims and tires are you running? I really like the look of the rims - they're different.

I don't think any of the brakes are dragging. Due to their design drum brakes are less effective going backwards than forwards. If one, or more, were dragging it would be harder to push it forward than backward.

And oh - ditto on the wheels. I'm digging them.

If I recall correctly my memory is excellent. My ability to access it is not.

Actually, after driving around a little more i can now push it by hand!
Even at my age Leon.

I guess it might have been something in the tranny (clutch pack or...) that needed some excercise.

So a conclusion is that our cars are built for driving.

Thanks all for your comments!

Thanks Todd and Dan for the compliments on the wheels!

The Wheels are 7*15 with 235/60 in front and 8*15 with 275/60 in rear.
I was looking for something like the old Halibrand mags and theese popped up, imported to Sweden by someone, and i am happy for them.

I think the adrenaline from the driving did it. the old bird needed a little motivation.
