Hi guys, I have a Muncie M-21 without a speedo drive gear. Is this something that I can replace at home or does it have to go to a shop to be pressed on? If I pull the tail housing will the reverse gear come out without falling apart? What determines the correct size for the drive gear? I believe there are 2 sizes of speedo drive gears and if you use the larger you must use the smaller of the driven gears. Please correct me if I am mistaken.
Thanks, CB56

CB56 - Are you sure there is no 'drive gear' in your Muncie? Not impossible but kinda hard to believe anyone was in there and forget to reinstall it. Maybe it's a matter of the drive gear not being correctly aligned with the bore for the driven gear? Here's a pic of the two steel drive gears. Yes, it's pressed onto the shaft and in most cases the trans needs to be out of the car.

Vet65te, thanks for the quick reply. The trans is out of the car. I'm getting ready to install it and was looking it over and pulled the bullit out to check the speedo gear and no drive gear. So that lead me to the questions. Not real familar with the inner workings of these as it has been many years since I had one apart and it was a T-10.

Is this a trans out of a car you just picked up or has the speedo been out of commision for a while? Here's a not-so-good pic of my trans where the steel speedo gear was not aligned properly. It was only off a little bit and worked for about 5K miles and then...nothing but torn up plastic driven gear teeth. Amazing it worked for so long.

Picked the trans up some time ago with a fresh rebuild from a friend who was using it in his pontiac race car. No need for a speedometer. There was also no driven gear. As I look into the speedo hole all I see is the shaft.
Thanks, CB56

I replaced one of those myself. It is pressed on, but I was able to heat the gear some and tap it on. I think some have a retaining clip, but I may be thinking of a different tranny. Easiest done if out of the ca.
I have a spare if interested. I replace mine because I believed it was the answer to my speedometer problem. Turns out the speedometer was the problem. So I have an extra gear.

You can tap them on with a long piece of pipe to fit over the output shaft.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll try to put it on. Thanks for the offer SAM_57 but I have the gear already.
Thanks again, CB56

I have a Muncie that came from a 64 ISC I had to scrap due to too much rust. Trans was not original to car but was a Muncie. The input shaft has no rings. Is that an indicator of low gear ratio or was that only a Super T-10 thing?

The 63-65 WIDE ratio Muncies (2.56 1st gear) have NO ring on the input shaft.
ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL close ratio Muncies (2.20 1st gear) have one ring on the input shaft.
ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL 66-74 wide ratio Muncies (2.52 1st gear) have 2 rings on the input shaft.
TWO EXCEPTIONS
1. If an original input shaft has been replaced with a new input, then there may not be any rings (regardless of the ratio).
2. The M22 Muncies DID NOT have any rings on the input shaft.
