My 56 doesn't seem to have front blinkers. The parking lights work...and the turn signals work on the rear lights...but nothing in front. I was expecting to see the front parking lights flashing. Is that right or is something broken??

Something is broken. Do the dash turn signal indicators work? If so, the problem is probably a bad connection at the firewall plug or the connector on the core support filler panel. Or both bulbs are burned out.

Physically check the front bulbs(should be #1157) to make sure they have two filaments in them. If so start back tracing voltage starting at the sockets and working back.

Are they the same as the parking lights? Cant be the bulb if the turn signal uses the parking light bulbs in the front...they work fine.

the bulb has 2 filaments. remove the bulb and you can see them, they should not be broken.check bulb with a battery and a wire by holding brass to one terminal and a wire from the other terminal to the lead terminals on the bulb. one should be brighter than the other.

Also if the front bulbs are burned out the rear signals should flash real fast I think!

It's possible the turn signal switch in the steering column is bad or has a bad wire/connection.
Although, you say the other lights work and blink, so it's probably OK.
Look under the dash at the column and you'll see a bundle of wires/connectors coming out of the column near the pedals. Make sure they are all plugged in.
But check everything as stated above first.
A PO (previous owner) may have just put in the wrong bulbs.

It's not the switch or the dash indicators wouldn't work. The indicators are wired to the front turn signals.
The blinkers will blink slow if all the bulbs are not working. The current of the bulbs heats the flasher switch to open the circuit. The fewer bulbs, the less heat, so the slower the flash.

Boom done. Looks like the wires in the engine bay were cut/disconnected. Who the hell cuts the wires to the lights?? For that matter...who the hell cuts the wires to the horn?? I also found those just hanging.
Thanks for the help guys!

Are your left and right turn indicators in your dash working correctly?
From the Ign switch:
there are Two brown 12v feed wires. One to the parking lights and one to the tail lights. The head lights are not a part of this ckt.
From the column turn signal switch:
Brake switch feed is white
Hazard light (if you have them) brown to hazard light relay.
Horn is black
Right tail/ stop is Dark Green,
Left tail/stop is yellow,
Right front park/turn is Dark Blue
Left front park/turn is Light Blue
The two wires you are most concerned with are the light blue and dark blue.
First thing I would do is buy two new bulbs at the auto parts store. Install them and move on.
Next, I would pull all the connectors apart back to he main connector under the dash. which should be a long skinny connector. Make sure all of the contacts are clean, locked tightly into the block and making tight contact with its mating contact. Check the solder joint, use a dab of dielectric silicone grease on the contacts(from any auto parts store).
If in doubt, make sure the wires in that harness are in good shapes.
Starting at the front right light (if your layout is he same as my 55....which it should be). Check continuity of every wire as you go along
With your particular problem, I don't suspect a bad turn signal switch or blinker relay.

From the Ign switch:

And the tail and parking lights are NOT fed from the brown wires on the ignition switch.
The park and tail lights get power from the red wire on the headlight switch and the flasher for the turn signals gets power from the pink accessory wire.

Hi Don
I will look at the AAW schematic again and look for where I went wrong.
Those little lines and my eyesight aren't a great match without a magnifier in between the two, which I didn't use here.
Take Care

I have a suggestion that maybe you don't want to hear but if your car has the original wireing I'd suggest rewire the car. New wires will solve a great many gremlins that will pop up and then you will have the answer to "who would cut.....).
Those original wires are 56-57 years old and brittle. I only have one original wire left on my car but I have it sitting in a box just waiting until I install it on the heater.
I needed a new headliner installed because of mice and the installer replaced my dome light wires, which, when he was taking the headliner out, were sparking from a worn through wire. I had asked him to replace the wires because I couldn't do them when I replaced the rest of the wires. I know I dodged a bullet there.
I rest my case.

I agree. There is tremendous peace of mind knowing that your wiring isn't going to spark or short-circuit when you don't expect it. After my 50+ year-old wires under the dash flamed on me, I decided to rewire the car, one harness at a time. I'm down to one original wire left on the car, and that one will be replaced soon.
I was amazed at how damaged the old wires were. Very unsafe. So, rewiring the car is a matter of safety and reliability. I highly recommend it.

Dito on re-wiring the whole car. If you can only do one harness at a time that a dxxn good start.

Hi Don
You are absolutely correct. With regard to the park lights and tail lights power feed, I misinformed. I stated Ignition switch when, in fact, I should have stated Head Light switch.
I should of caught that. Sorry
