I just replaced a worn out TH200R4 with an '84 TH700-R4. I had to get a shorter drive-shaft from a '94 Caprice and add a steel plate to support the rear mount. The plate bolts to the stock cross member in the wagon. The manual shift linkage had to be modified because the shaft in the 700 is 2" farther back than the shaft in the 200. Cooler lines could be gently bent to reach. Basic overhaul and repair parts for the 700 ran about $220. The usual up-grade parts to make it "shift-with-authority" ran the bill up another $50. The switches and wiring inside the 700 had to be modified to a type 4 or type 9 configuration to trick the '82 Impala wagon ECM into thinking the car was still running the wimpier 200 trans. I made all the special tools I needed in my neighbors machine shop. I've never rebuild an auto before. I'd had the ASTG manual for a couple of decades but found it worth the money to buy Hayes techbook 10360 on Amazon.com ($5.60) to my door. All the photographs helped me understand the text and sketches in the ASTG manual better. I'll be a lot less afraid to open the Quadra-jet on the healthy (roller cam) 383 now.

Sounds pretty good, whenever I've seen pics taking a tranny apart looks daunting. I'm surprised you didn't just go with a built 200r4 as they're lighter and have a better first gear. Don't really know about durability but I have seen them in drag cars.

I had both the original 200 and a truck 700 on-the-shelf. The 200 had a worn out stator and a lot of cracks in the front pump. It's just a whole lot easier to find parts for the 700. The 700 is a larger diameter from the front pump and input shaft all the way back. The wagon has a truck block (383) in it so at 5,600# empty the truck 700 is a little more in keeping with the heavy hauler profile of the wagon.
