Need to oil my gear box on my 63, someone mentioned using a heavy gear oil like 90 weight or 90 weight mixed with chassis lube to prevent leaks. I have quite a bit of royal purple sae 75w-140 left over from filling my differential, would this work good or is it a totaly different oil than what is needed?

Frank, are you talking about your transmission? If so, which one do you have? 75W140 is really too thick for a manual trans. The syncros like something quite a bit lighter, like 75W90 or even 5W30 syncromesh oil.

If you are talking about steering gear box lube, see Jalapeno's comment in this thread.
Correct lube for steering gear?

I checked daves link and i think im going to go with the mixture of 90 weight and chassis lube. Forgive my dumb question but what exactly will a bottle of 90 weight specify on the label, how do i tell which is 90 weight?

I will take exception to this. Back in 1962, when my car was new, and the 4 speed trans didn't want to shift on the very cold mornings in New Hampshire, the dealership changed out the original factory lube for Kendall 80-90-140 three star gear lube, and added 2 q ounce tubes of Lubriplate molybdenum disulfide. The transmission never gave me another morning of not shifting problems. They got the information about the lube change from the Boston Zone office.
Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.

Glad it worked for you, junky. I can't imagine what was originally in there that made 140 gear lube and the additive look good.
