Three times in the last two weeks, my '39 Chevy 350/350 would not start. Turn the key and nothing, no sound at all. Tried seveal times and then after a minute or less it starts. It was a little hot each time, about 190*. This happened a year ago and I cleaned all the wires at the starter and thought it was solved. Just yesterday when this happened, I could smell hot wires inside. I have a mini starter I could put on it, but I'm not sure if this is a starter or ignition switch problem. Would trying to start it with the key several times get the wires hot if it was the switch or the starter?

Most likely the connection of the "sol" wire (usually purple wire) at the ignition switch. Do other things work (lights, heater, radio) when it fails? If you have a neutral safety switch, it could have a poor connection. If it's a micro switch on a floor shift, it may be bad.

I have played with the neutral safety switch and wiggled the gear shift (column) and the wires at the ignition switch. When the key is back to the run or on position, all electical works. I can't seem to do anything to make it start. It just decides to start! I'll check the purple wire.

I had this happen on my 350 in my wagon years ago. If I stopped for gas somewhere I had to take a break for a while. We were on vacation at the time and every stop seemed to take longer to be able to restart. At the beginning of the trip, it was only a 5 minute wait but by the time we got home a week later, it was a 45 minute wait. Ended up replacing the solenoid on the starter and never had any more problems.

had this happen to me several times shortly after getting my 55'. During the trouble shooting process, I noticed that when you grab the key in the ignition, the entire ignition assembly was rather warm. Nothing would work, no Gen light or electric fuel pump (Keyed 12v) I thought this to be abnormal. I replaced the ignition switch and problem disappeared.
My first thought was starter solenoid, but after feeling the hot switch and later finding green corrosion on all contacts, I realized what it might be. This led to the current project of a complete new wire harness.
