I have installed the dash & petal assy from a 1959 El Camino in my 1965 Biscayne.
I bought the clutch (10 1/2") from NAPA. It's
the diaphram type.
It is very hard to depress & am wondering what the is the function of the heavy spring mounted on the side of the petal assy......Could it be the problem or something else. The spring seems to move very little when depressing the clutch.

I've always wondered the same thing. The '59, '60 and '61 all have that same type spring and other than maybe some stability and a little spring power, I don't see what the real purpose is. What I do know is, it is not the easiest spring to take out. The '62 and newer cars went to a different design. Other than the Diaphram Pressure Plate itself, I'm wondering if you have the correct leverage applied with the non-original set up.

Its called an "over center spring", but I don't know what it does. I got mine from Jens, maybe he knows.

The over-center spring is harder to push at first while the clutch is easier to push. As the pedal get to about half travel of its arc it is a straight pull so no effect on pedal pressure other than friction in the bushings. After that is pulls the pedal down lessening the amount of effort needed to push the cluth pedal down the rest of the way. Without that spring it's all leg power.

It´s also adjustable although i believe the adjustment has to do with the "neutral" point and not tension strength.

I found my problem......there was a misalignment
between the clutch pelal & the Zbar.

the spring you're talking about does two things. it helps when it is over center to depress the clutch, then it holds the throwout bearing off the pressure plate when you let off the clutch. without this spring you would have no "free travel" causing the throwout bearing to fail prematurely.
