The HOT reading on my temp gauge was one of the first things I tackled when I got my '65. I removed the thermostat, and things seemed to get better... my temp gauge wouldn't get pegged @ HOT, but it still creeps up, right to the pegged mark on the gauge. I replaced the temp sensor & drove her around last night, long enough for her to get to full temp [of course she was pegged], and then I got out my infra-red thermometer & started checking spots on the engine & radiator.

The motor [Thermo housing, water pump, heads] hovered between 158-170, the radiator was 140, the temp sensor was 155, and the exhaust manifold hovered around 280... even though the gauge was pegged at hot. I even put my hand on the places where I measured the temperature, and nothing was so hot that I couldn't touch it comfortably, except the exhaust manifolds.

I have the best wiring harness you can buy... from American AutoWire of course, and I'm wondering how to check the resistance on the temp sensor. Since I'm going to pull the dash panel this winter, I'll check the gauges then.

Thanks for your help guys,

Greg

Why not try a new mechanical gauge and see what reading you get.

I just bought a '66 Impala but I have old Corvettes. This issue about the temp gauge comes up quite often in the Corvette forum. This post applies to Corvettes but I'm sure much of it applies to other Chevys. Read the post from "Buns". It has about everything you want to know about temp gauges and senders

Thanks for the input to the 'Vettes... since I'm sure there are more Vettes with the L78 motor left over than there are Full Size Chevys, I'm sure the subject comes up more often in that forum.
