I've been trying to get the best pictures of my car, and I can't seem to get THE shot. What kind of lighting have you guys had the best luck with?

I know Super Chevy did an article on photographing your car, and I wish I'd kept that issue, but... obviously I didn't

Dusk makes for the deepest paint shots in my opinion. Just enough darkness to make the paint look real deep.My car is no where near even a 50 footer when it comes to the paint but a shot at dusk makes it look like it has a nice paint job.

If you catch the daylight just as the sun comes up, the light has almost a liquid quality to it. That is my favorite time of day for a color photo.

Taking several pictures with different backgrounds can help as well as different lighting. I like overcast days for pictures.

I agree with Brian that dusk is the best time, with the sun setting behind you. If you look at car mags you can often see the actual horizon line with the glow of the sunset in the side of the car. Also roll all your windows up.

I like overcast days. It distributes the light evenly over the car. Dusk or dawn is o.k. but the redish hue in the light can tend to alter the color of the car a bit.

Use a wide angle lens which will allow you to get closer to the car and still fill the frame.

Also try with and without a fill in flash.

I use a tri pod and set the camera for a longer exposure.Dusk is the best time. Set the camera up for the shot and use the timer delay so the camera doesn't move. Just my 2 cents. And yes you can polish a turd.

Note how the reflective glare is not present when taking a pic on an overcast day.

Taken on a Saturday morning, around 7:00...while in Michigan using the Iphone camera, sun not overhead and this was in a friend's backyard. So I would agree that dusk should provide a better backdrop (less shadows), although first thing in morning isn't bad either.

Oh yeah, did the rear wing on your car come with it, or did you have to buy it, and, if you bought it, what did you pay?

Take it from someone who shoots photos on the side. Overcast days can be your friend. Avoid sunny days.

when I get some extra money, I'll update to flickr pro...meanwhile, when I get the chance I'll post most of the pictures to the site (I'm under bbs65belair).

The "wing" is original to the 1966 wagons, picked it off ebay for $50 plus shipping from Michigan I think (I know it was somewhere up north).

I'm always on the lookout for cool 65's and 66's. Every now and again I get lucky with a good shot. It was a sunny day, but as everyone has noticed, colors seem to pop when not in direct sunlight. I was posted up on a shady corner. Tough to get good shots during a cruise, but this is from this summer. Beautiful car, and I wish I had a chance to talk to the owners form the North....

Feel free to right-click and "copy image url" and paste it into a new browser tab/window. This will reveal the actual size image... (A nice trick when looking at auto-resized pics on this forum)

Dusk is a great time to shoot, but don't depend on your camera's auto white balance feature to get the tone right. If you can adjust it, make sure to set it to shadow or overcast. That will help punch up the colors a bit.

Shooting a car is often like shooting a mirror, it's all about what is reflected off the car. I like to position the vehicle such that there is a big open area of visible horizon behind the camera. A nice sunrise/sunset works great on darker cars. I prefer shade for most shoots but direct sunlight has its uses too.

Here's one of Dad's Studebaker in open shade, and one of my '57 in direct sunlight.

The Doors look like a 90's Full Size Impala and the front end looks like it used to be a tri-5 shoebox, but I was wrong once before, and I'm probably not right here, either

I seem to remember magazine ads for a kit car that incorporated styling cues from tri-five Chevys - it's possibly one of them.
There was another one that did the same thing with early '50s Ford panels on to late Thunderbirds I think.

You shouldn't trust my memory though
