Hi Guys,
I recently bought a 68 camaro project car for my wife. (No, she isn't bulding it). I wasn't looking to buy a car at the time but the price was so cheap I would be a fool not to buy it. I am more a 55-57 chevy guy so I know nothing about first Gen. camaro's.
I bought the car without an engine. It has a 12 bolt posi, bucket seats and disc brakes. I am told there is no real way to identify if it was an SS, RS or Z28 without having the original engine. Is this true? It has the wide chrome moldings along the bottom of the side windows. I don't see these on many Camaro's I see. Mostly on the RS models. Are these just a option that were available for any model or do they indicate anything about the car? The car doesn't have the original fenders so I can't tell if it had RS or SS badges on it. I wonder about the model because I bought it from an estate of a guy that is in a hospital unable to talk. All the other cars that he had in the garage were real SS models. Just would like to know what it is if possible.
Thanks

No useful info on the trim tag or VIN. Protect-o-plate or bill of sale is the only sure way to prove one from another. Check and see where the speedo cable is routed. An SS cable comes out of the firewall to the right of the master cylinder at an angle. There are other "signs" too. I believe the wide window trim came on deluxe interior cars.

Thanks to both of you. Richard, that link you gave me is a ton of good info. Based on the little I read, the side "Bright Belt Moldings" are part of a package that could be ordered. They were on the RS but not SS models as standard. Thanks Guys for the awesome help.

If it is the original 12 bolt, it will either be an SS car or a Z28. RS was not a performance option.

L30 with M20 4 sp trans that is. M15 (3sp) or M35 (PG) got a 10 bolt.
Look for the tire pressure label in glove box;
Z28 has 15 inch tires (E70x15). If the tire size is 7.35x14 it cannot be a SS car. Optional tire was F70x14 on all cars but standard on the SS models (350 and 396). While not certain (glove easy to change) it can give some confidence.
350 and 396 were the only engines in a SS

Posi was never standard, always an extra cost option the customer had to order, even on the performance cars.
