So we were aligning the trunk lid this morning. Me in the trunk and son outside positioning. I was tightening up one of the bolts and "zing" I felt it strip. I pulled out the bolt and it looks like the threads on the bolt itself are stripped. does anyone know if those are available from anywhere? I've looked in my catalogs and didn't find them.
I know they are 5/16-24 3/4" long but they have the notched washer on the bolt and they don't seem to come off. I'm thinking of cutting some new threads. If I find the nuts are stripped too, is there any way to get new nuts in there? Maybe a tap run through would clean them up enough to make them work.
Has anyone run into this before and if so, what have you done with it? thanks for the help. Bill

I have not seen them reproduced. You could tap out the "nut" to 3/8-24 and use a bolt of the same dimension if they are both stripped.

have you checked to see if they are the same on a 55 chevy?
If they are there are many out there.

In the threads in the lid are stripped, you might try a "keensert." Google them. I've used them many times in industrial applications, and they work great.

better to use a thread chaser if you can come up with one. They dont cut out any material like a tap does.

I ran a tap through the bolts this morning and put a bolt in from the hardware store and it tightened down. So I'm thinking I'm good.
