I have a 1980 k10 silverado that I put a new 350 in and got all the electrical hooked up and went to hook the battery up and was in a hurry to get the truck started and hooked the battery up backwards. I put negative cable on postive bat post and pos cable on neg post. When I did that up on the firewall above the driver side valve cover something smoked. I have looked on here and got an idea that it might be a terminal block? Is that correct? So what I did is got the battery hooked up right and the truck didnt start not even any lights in the dash. What could be the problem? Someone told me to check fusable links and if not that check what smoked on the firewall which i believe might be termianl block. I am not very good with automotive electrical so thought I would get answers from people on here. Hope someone can help me.

DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THAT TERMINAL BLOCK SHOULD BE YOUR FUSE PANEL,CHECK THEM,THINKEN BACK THE FUSABLE LINK COULD HAVE A RUBBER TAB STICKEN OUT OF THE HARNESS,LOOK 4 THAT ALSO.

Obviously, check the wiring at the firewall where you saw smoke and try to find what burned.
You could also check the fusible links down at the starter solenoid. With the key off, the most likely thing to short would be the alternator so check the wiring between the solenoid and the alternator.

Fusible link wires typically will not burn the insulation jacket around them. The insulation jacket for the fusible link wire is very rubbery as compared to the plastic insulation jacket for normal AWG wire. You can pull on the fuse link wires and if they are burned in two inside the insulation they will stretch. If they stretch you have found the burnt one and need to replace it.
That truck has two fusible link wires at the positive battery cable on the starter. Disconnect the battery and give those a tug to see if they stretch. There is a junction on the firewall and I can’t remember if it has fuse links on it or not. I just helped a friend re-wire his 1981 and if I remember there is a fuse link on the firewall that goes to the air conditioner system but it shouldn’t prevent the truck from starting.
Hope this helps,
Steve
