During the rebuild of my 2 x 4BC engine, I noticed that the head bolts had a M within a circle, the oil pan bolts had L within a recess, the lower 1/4 UNC bolts had J, the intake bolts had AP within a circle. I have also noticed some TR markings as well, but these may be no associated.
Does anyone know what these mean? Are they manufacturers or a factory code meant to aid the assembly workers.

Ask Rich, he used to own Paragon Corvette Reproductions, now deals with vintage fasteners.

AP and TR are correct for our cars.
M I believe is later GM stuff.
Never saw J
is it L or E on those oil pan bolts?

I tore apart an original 55 V8 years ago that had M bolts on the intake manifold. These are just the manufacturer's identification. I have TR bolts in both 3/8-16 and 5/16-18. Your AP intake bolts should be cadmium plated on 2X4 and FI engines.

I have had a reply back from Richard Fortier who once had Paragon Corvettes, I will partially quote what he said about the subject of head markings.
Rod, having had many years selling and making fasteners and doing research of fastener manufacturers, I can tell you the following: “TR” stands for Towne-Robinson, a Detroit bolt maker. This firm went out of business in the 80’s. “M” indicates Michigan Bolt who has morphed into another company and doesn’t use the “M” as their mark any longer. The “AP” name has eluded me but I was once told it stood for Allied Products, not sure. I made this fastener while I owned Paragon Reproductions from 1970 thru 2002, when I sold the company. I think the “J” stands for Jackson who is out of business as well. Most US made fastener companies are gone now as fasteners are cheaper to produce elsewhere, to bad about this fact. As you might now see, all fastener companies had to identify their product with their assigned logo so if problems arose GM could track the specific bolt back to them.
With regard to the M marked head bolts, I checked our original non restored 57 4dr Hard Top, which has a Flint engine, and it has M (Michigan Bolt) bolts.
