When I replaced the compressor on my Suburban, they recommended replacing the filter also. It is about 4-6 inches long and about a half inch diameter cone shaped filter. Where is it supposed to go?

Sounds like you are describing the orifice, that would be installed on one of the lines on the Condenser. I cannot recall if it was the one from the compressor or to the drier, I am thinking the one to the drier... you unbolt the line and use a needle nose to pull the old one and then install the new one.

When replacing the compressor, you should replace the orifice tube and the accumulator (or "drier"), at minimum. A thorough job would include flushing out the rest of the system (lines, condenser, evaporator core) with solvent meant for A/C systems, to get any debris, old oil, contaminants out of the system.

to add Richard, when I did the a/c in my 98 a year ago some one said I should replace the hoses off my pump and I did not listen. I had to replace them this spring as they failed last fall so I personally would add that to the list.

Alot of compressor manufacturers won't warranty them without replacement of all the parts Richard said, and flushing the system with a "flush". I fixed my AC two months ago and purchased it all as a "kit". The flush was aggravating because it was just a quart can. I had to funnel it into the lines and blow them out with air.
Keep throwing money at it, it'll get better...
