An acquaintance of mine who owns a restoration/body shop was doing a test drive of a GTO which was nearing final restoration (happened Tue).
A kid in a Toyota pickup, TEXTING, never touched his brakes. The kid had insurance and there were 4 witnesses that stopped and will testify. Of course, the kid denied he was texting.

This Ram Air 442 is some of his work (The Chevelle is mine).

Years ago, I got rear ended on the QEW. I should have known better.
I spotted this lady putting on makeup in my rear view. Thinking "Oh, this is an accident waiting to happen" I changed lanes and moved up several car lengths. I lost her in the traffic behind me and thought nothing more of it until I came to a slow in the congestion. Low and behold, here she is barreling towards me, still checking her eyeliner in her driver side vanity mirror. I barely had enough time to get it out of gear point the car towards the guardrail when she clocked me.
It's not just texting.

Of course, the kid denied he was texting.
That's a shame and what a waste. It doesn't matter if the kid admits texting or not. He's at fault in a rear-ender.
I've been rear-ended twice, in the same car. Don't know if the drivers were on a cell phone or not, although one did admit to not paying attention.
I didn't carry collision coverage on the car, as it was only worth maybe 3 grand. Even though the other drivers were ticketed 'at fault' in both cases, all I could collect was a $500 mini tort.
The first time I was sitting at a traffic light and got hit hard. Glad I wasn't on a motorcycle, or in my Vette. I was able to get it repaired at a local community college collison dept for about $700 in material and lab fee. They even pulled it straight. I had the car back for about a year and BOOM, I get rear-ended again. This time the damage was minimal due to the fact I was moving. The driver ran up on me as I was slowing, turn signal on, to make a turn. I'm a defensive driver but it's kinda hard to defend from behind.
I'll bet the owner was really looking forward to getting his car back and having it to enjoy. Hopefully, the shop owner wasn't hurt as the car looks like a frame total. I hope it works out for the shop and the car owner.

HARTBREAKING - would be a poor understatement!!!
Your friend is a STRONG man for the restrant he showed with the kid - I don't know if I could keep myself from unscrewing his head to shake every last drop of $hit out of it.
How did the Goat's owner take it? I WOULD BE CRUSHED.
Hopefully, the kid gets cancelled and can't afford new insurance. Then he can text all he wants on the bus or in a cab!!!
Cell phones and texting are illegal in CA, but I see it nearly every day. The cops I see are too busy working the radar in blind corners on my way to work.
My condolences to your friend and the owner. We can only hope this will be a bigger NIGHTMARE for the kid...he'll put the word out to his friends!

Your Friend needs to tell the kids insurance that he is going with the owner to the Barrett-Jackson Auction and help the owner pick out another car. Then him and the owner are sending them and the kids dad the bills for a new Classic and all doctor bills and time lost from work.

Ahhh Jeez, I coulda gone all day without knowing that. I think the kid should tell the owner, then just maybe he'd understand there are serious consequences for his dumb actions.
About 20 years ago or so, I was returning a video tape to Blockbusters that was within walking distance of my apartment. I got up to the vid store which was on Aurora Ave (hwy 99) in North Seattle when I walked up on a rearend'r. A cube van had accordianed the back end of late 50's turquois T-bird which looked like it was in really nice shape (before). As I slowed my walk past the accident, and by the owner talking to the officer, I heard him say (I think he may have been dazed or in shock, a bit) "I just got it back from being restored ___ months ago". I felt bad for him, and feel even worse for the owner of the GTO.

Very sad, and I hope no one was injured. The insurance compan can check cell phone records and see if he was texting on or about the time of the accident. I feel bad for e owner who is in port health, and likely had a strong attachment to this car as we all do for ours.

i hope the owner of the GTO has a good lawyer as it will take a law suit to get the kids insurance to fix the car. a friend had a 57 lincoln show car that was rear ended and it took him over 3 years of fighting to get them to repair the car. if i was the driver of the GTO i would have fell out of the car on the ground complaining about my back to get the company to settle up. they will try and total the car as i went thru this on a rear end deal. i knew that is what they were going to do so i had the car repaired at my expence and after that they had no choice but to pay up.

Went to Fresno a few years back to see a customer of mine. I just turned off the freeway ramp in time to see (probably a 17-18 year old) loose control of her car while coming around a corner.
She was driving what had to be her daddy's 56, white/light blue, 2 door hardtop, up a lamp post. The front of her car looked just about as bad the the rear of this GTO.
Yup. The car looked totally restored....2 seconds before she hit the pole.

RIP GTO,
Looks like a total to me. This car has damage you can't see from photos all the way to the front fenders. You have to really have sympathy for the owner, the cars restoration and the thought of getting it back may have been his only motivation to keep on fighting the cancer. Very sad. Hopefully the kid learned a valuable lesson but probably not since he's denying texting while driving, He sure as hell wasn't looking where he was going to hit this car that hard. He's only thinking about himself and not the poor owner of this car which doesn't suprise me with a lot of kids attitudes today.

Tim, Tim, Tim. You must learn to be more tolerant of young people, regardless of where they score on the moron scale. Keep in mind they can't be held responsible for their actions, since accidents like this are the fault of the "haves" who can afford classic cars. And, of course, it's simply not fair that the less fortunate, moron kids don't have nice cars, too.

Ya...I kinda see what you mean Mike. Really tough to afford anything nice after the weekly/monthly investments in body ink, entertainment, hoops and sound systems. I'll guess that kid was sooooooo broke - HE COULDN'T PAY ATTENTION.
IMO, the kid needs to MAN UP and tell the Goat's owner what happened - NOW. I was also young once, and had to pay the heavy price for being STUPID more than once!
I would also be sending an introduction letter from my attorney to both the kid and his insurance co. - that he would be standing by to handle any delays in handing this claim. Time is of the essence with the owner's declining health.
My hart cries for the owner, after learning he has terminal cancer.
Tom, PLEASE let us know how this deal plays out. This is a NIGHTMARE that could happen to any of us here. BUUUUUUUUUUT... it would dang-sure NOT stop me from driving my cars whenever I want, anywhere I WANT!!!
My BEST WISHES go out to the Goat's owner, and your friend. I PRAY it's not a total...

That is real sad! These morons that text while driving should be shot! I was delivering parts for O'Reilly's in Yakima, Washington and ran into that every day. I almost got nailed several times by some moron texting and taking my side of the road. Make the punk pay through the nose to restore that GTO!

Man, what a tragic sight! This story is a nightmare-destroyed car project, stupid kid, cell phone texting, probably attitude from the kid and parents, owner is in terrible health, upset car shop owner. What a nightmare! I like the idea of the kid having to tell the sick owner what happened but I think his parents, both if he has them, must be in attendance when he does this. Make the kid own up to his mistake and his ignorance and make sure he apologizes for his stupidity. But, make the parents explain why they raised such a stupid kid and then make them break out the wallet and pay the man the full restoration price or whatever he wants for the car. Yeah, please let us know what happens to this story. So sad! My son sent me an email the other day that showed a newer Corvette stuffed under the rear end of an 18 wheeler that had stopped in front of the Vette. The captions said that the driver was found in the front seat with a cell phone in his hands while his head was found in the rear seat. Kinda gives a new meaning to the term "texting" doesn't it?
