So about a week ago my car broke down and I thought the rear end was blown. When i would let out the clutch, the resistance was so great that the motor would stall. I couldnt push the car, in nutral either. I had the car twed home on a flat bed a search out rear ends.
About a week went by and since we powder coat at work, I figured Id take the opertunity to do my wheels.since I figured the rear end was locked up, I tried to take off the lugs while in the air. both wheels spun! I tried starting again and letting out the clutch in 1st. the motor still died.
could a broken u joint do this? I really think its up at the trans end. In retrospect I think i head some vibrations the last time I was out coming from that general area.
Im pretty excited as I was going too head out tomorrow and buy a PG rear end for the car, if I dont need to, I dont want to!
Thanks guys!

Sir X Loin,
Sounds like your tranny may be stuck in two gears. When you put the car up in the air, you can rotate the tires without the pinion gear moving. I suppose your pinion gear or drive shaft could be "siezed" as well, but don't know how common that is.

My vote is for a loose u-joint. If it came loose (the vibration) it will bind up inside the bell shaped cover. Very easy to check this out. If the flanges on the little lock clips on the u-joint bolts break off, the bolts can back out and your u-joint will separate.
Happened to me last summer.
Thankfully after getting parked, not on the freeway ten minutes before!

If you are lucky you can find the little bolt laying inside the ball cover and just put it back in with NEW locking clips. If you need a u-joint check NCA or others.

I have the collar off, I removed the 4 1/2" bolts on the rear, and the 9/16" on the engine side. I cant seem to seperate the Ball. What am I doing wrong? I cant get that apart.

Never mind, I got it. The U joint exploded and sieze in the cup. The inner ball is pretty chewed up, but it should be ok.
I do think I will have to shell out the outragous 190$ at Chevs or the 40's for a new U joint and yokes. The bearing seats are really marred. The retaining bolts were all busted off too.

Yeah, I'm going to try and fix the old one. 190 is insane.
Im going to clean them up and see what I can do.
I will need a few gaskets. Chev's has a pack, but I dont want to buy what I dont need. I need the cork ball gasket, The ball retainer gasket and whatever you call the block that I would call a tail shaft houseing. Any idea who would have these on the cheap?

The gasket kit is pretty cheap. Trying to make do with something that is not quite right particularly the ball gasket which is kind of special may end of being more expensive. The PO of my 52 tried to do it with silicone which is almost as bad as nothing at all.

Wondering if the u joint took a dump because of incorrect driveshaft inclination .... since the car is so low.

I didnt think of that. It has 4" blocks in the rear on the original sagging springs.
