Hi,
I need your help and opinions...I'm going to upgrade the wheels and tires on my 65 SS impala. I need to know how wide a tire I can run in the rear without encountering any problems. Im going with American Racing Torque Thrust M's wheels 20x8.5, 0.0mm offset, and 4.75 back spacing all the way around. A guy at the local tire and wheel shop who also used to own a 65 Impala wagon said I could run a 275/35R20 in the rear with no problems. Does that seem right??? The second half on my question is a matter of opinion, in the front i'm not sure if I should run a 245/35R20 or a 255/35R20, what do you all think?? Your info and opinions would be greatly appriciated!! thanks!!

Hmmm, not sure on the rear tire size, but I have run 245/35/20 up front with stock suspension and zero rubbing or issues. I would think you would be ok with 255-35-20, as long as you have your backspacing correct.
Same goes for the rear. 275's should fit, just make sure your backspacing is on the money.
Oh, and welcome! Care to tell us a little about your car and share your plans with it? People tend to like to see introductions!

You should get a nice set of Glass-Ply 825x14 tires, otherwise you will wind up with some blingy, hippity-hopping wheels that make your car look like this one...
... HaHa, Just kidding. You should check out Nicks ride, the rims & tires on his car look great [I actually like bigger rims, but I also like being able to get in the car without a ladder... I wonder how the guy in this picture gets in his car, lets hope he can get out without breaking a leg]

Hey,thanks for the info Nick. You have a very sweet ride, what size tire are you running in the rear? I really like the way that set-up looks. My car looks very similar to yours, same color only I have white vinyl seats and tourquise carpet. I will post pics when I get a chance. She just went into the shop to have the motor pulled and rebuilt. She's got a 400ci SBC thats getting new forged pistons, mild cam, polished and ported heads, new aluminum intake, new headers and disc brake conversion up front. Trans is also being pulled and rebuilt and getting a new shift kit and gear ratio changed to acommidate the new 20" wheels.

do a search for kwhizz and his tire combo.
I have the same and am satisfied with it.
17's on the front and 19's on the rear.

Thanks... If I were to do it over again, I would put a little more meat on the tires, and probably do 19" wheels up front instead of 18's. I like the stagger, would just like it a bit less. It works well with the 2" drop spindles though.
My rear tires are 255/35/20... I should have gone a bit wider, and more sidewall... next time ;-)
PS, cant wait to see pics of yours!

Nick,
Funny you should mention getting tires with more meat on them. My daughter gave me a ride to my hand surgeon's, the [replacement] tires I bought for her New Beetle are really low-profile, and all I could think was how cushy the new Hankook tires that I bought for my '65 are.
...Somehow I knew Tom would be dragging out the time-out chair for me

Hey guys
Just for your info, I had 20x8.5 and 20x10.0 wheels, both with a zero offset (= backspacing of 4.25" F and 5" R) and ran 255/35R20 & 285/30R20 without any problems. I've since fitted these onto a 63 Impala wagon and also fits and rides fine!!
Regards
Mike

I was thinking falling and breaking bones would be deserving for doing stupid things like that to a car.
