running hard through the gears, runs fine. coasting down after that, the engine dies. this has only happened twice in like six years so troubleshooting could take some time. after a few minutes it starts and runs fine. could it be that little red box?

Check your grounds really good, could be a loose ground.

If it's a points car, I would just change the condenser. Been known to fail when heated.

I would have not thought of that, I use electronic ignitions. I do remember that happening on a few cars I had that were 60's year models. My Dad would get crazy when it happened and replace both points and condenser to solve the problem.

well the old dorfs with electronic ignitions did that alot too. im thinking that its not a heat problem cause it runs hard and strong till i let off and coast. maybe its flooding out somehow....

Have you verified that it loses spark when does it? If not it could be a vapor lock.

How much rpm are you running? Maybe you are floating the valves and shutting down the engine. That use to happen to me with a big hydralic cam. I would wind it to 6500+ and pump up the lifters sometimes. Engine would shut down and not restart until the lifter drained.

the first time it happened (years ago) i think i remember it losing spark. the last time it happened, when i checked for spark it was there. its a solid cam, so no pump up. only running about 5500 rpms. its wierd, i coast down and when i get back on it its just mush. assuming there is no spark the engine gets a big shot of raw fuel. i would think thats enough to soak the plugs. i need a test and tune session.

Maybe you have a needle/seat hanging open and flooding the engine. Pull, check,re-install and re-adjust float levels.

Sounds more like a carburetor problem than ignition.
