When my original paint, never modified, almost rust free example appeared for sale in 2001, I immediately arranged to purchase the car and paid the asking price of $5500.00 as it was a race to get it bought. People were all over this car trying to buy it. I was the first "Johnny on the spot" to show-up with real cash! Paid $500.00 to move it back as it was sitting on four flat tires.
The car was located in Hannibal Missouri via one of the nationwide antique auto publications. The car was sitting in a garage for more than 35 years. It still had 1965 license plates on it. The owner died in 1966 and the wife just left it sitting in the garage all those years. Miles showing on the odometer of 14,000.
The original interior was in remarkable condition. The car was stored in a heated garage without exposure to sunlight and temperature extremes. The windows, and vents were closed which prevented mouse infestation, insect, dust, and mildew damage. But there were numerous scratches and small dings and dents on the sides from years of garage damage from lawn mowers and people walking by it and storing stuff all around it etc. Plus the old guy had rubbed it on the garage door frame a few times. There were several scrapes where obviously he had a problem judging how wide and long it was.
But of course the engine was locked-up tight from surface rust on the cylinder walls. After getting it running it smoked and used oil like crazy, some of the electrical items didn't work simply from sitting so long etc. After fiddling with it for a coupe of years, finally the clutch fiber plate disintegrated and I decided to take it apart and do it right. I spent almost one year taking it all apart and mechanically restoring it. As well as doing some very minor rust repair and new trunk floor because of small pin-holes in the trunk floor where a leaking trunk gasket way back when had allowed water to stand in the recesses under the mat. There was minor rust in the front fender lips directly behind the wheels (not down on the heels by the rockers, but up in the fender wheel opening itself) This was because of a large quantity of gravel road silt which had built-up in there and held moisture (this was a new problem I had not seen before) The fender heels and the areas above the headlights were perfect! The floors and rockers were 100% rust free. The left rear quarter panel had some minor perforation in the lower rear also because of standing water from the trunk leak.
All four of the under-bumper valances were not rusty but were severely smashed in all four corners so they were extensively reworked as NOS ones are very expensive to buy and this part has not been reproduced. . (I think downtown Hannibal had angle parking and very high curbs?)
The white is still the original paint, the blue has been redone in RM Diamont Acrylic Urethane BC/CC back in 2004~05.
The interior is still the original including the windlace and the minty original felt-type headliner that sedans had.

Mine was purchased new by my Aunt and Uncle. It sat in their garage since the purchase of a new Olds in 1975. I bought it after he died, in 1999. It had 46,000 actual miles, all original, including some 60's era tires (a couple with tubes no less). After an engine overhaul and a lot of elbow grease, I entered it in the Tulsa Chevy show in July of 2000; it was the featured car in the April, 2001 Chevy Times magazine.
A diamond ain't nothing but a piece of coal that stuck with it. Brother Dave Gardner; ca. 1963

I found my '60 Biscayne in 2010 at an estate auction. It was sitting in the back of the old commercial chicken house (the property owner was a poultry grower). It had been sitting there since 1972. Still had the '72 tags on it and the county registration/inspection stickers in the windsheild expired in '73....

I traded my 1968 Cougar for it.
When the Cougar was finished, I put a sign in the window at a show " For Trade, Whatcha Got? "

My story is long, and has some bumps.
I have loved 59's since about 1982 (I was still riding a single-speed bike), and always thought it would be neat to own a car with wings. Around 1997, I decided I wanted a 1959 wagon. One had been sitting in a yard just 4 houses away from me for about 2 years, and the VERY DAY I decided to ask the owner about it after I got off work, it disappears. It was there at 3am, but not at 1pm.
So I start asking my friends in the car scene about them and they all tell me "Yes, I know of one!" But it ends up getting sold to another friend of mine that knew I was looking for one. He eventually ends up selling it without telling me.
Eventually, I get on to eBay and find just the car I want. It is being sold by a member of this site (which I didn't know at the time), yes Chevytalk. I win the auction and send the deposit to him.
When I get to the car (750 miles away), the seller cannot meet me due to previous plans. The OWNER of the car does not want to sell it AT ALL. So I am stuck with no car, no money, and no refund.
The owner has another car that is available, and I end up buying it with him prominsing to send the title to me. 6 months later, I still don't have it and he won't answer the phone. I jump through a bunch of hoops, pay a bunch of money for DMV fines, and eventually get the title.
A year later, while still trying to locate parts to build my car, I run across the Original one that I "won" on eBay. It was for sale by someone else. So I make the 750 mile trip again. This time, I get the car AND the title.
3 kids and a move later, and it still waits for me to continue restoring...

The age is 15 when I was told by my cousin hector that a 1964 IMPALA 2 door non ss popd up for sale by a walk in customer at his local parts place saying that there was a 64 up for sale , but my cousin didn't get his digits to hook up a viewing of the
Car so my cousin said john I know where he works ask him there about the car mention u would like to see it ..the car was located in Greenfield CA ,so off I went to view car the next day after guy got out from work .I had address and spoke to him saying I will be there to see car ..asking price $900 after seeing car I noticeably see potential ..without him telling anything bout the car I checked my vin tag on door made sure it was not picked at love clean vin tags I checked cowl tag everything ok.off to under frame it had been lifted at one point in its life..but that was ok it was my first IMPALA 2 door hardtop coupe non ss ,no motor or tranny or driveline, cheap tires ,no door handles guy had sold them ,no back or front bumper ..inside had been done all white headliner too, floor black ..dash chrome, with chain mini steering wheel no radio ,chromes inside interior were there ..back seats were there..candy apple paint had been damaged buy pitbulls running around and hoping on top with there nails and slobbering and fighting around that clean paint job as it sat whileit was outa service..garaged.with crap rammed inside front seats crap on top of car ..weighting down the roof a bit from the heavy load..lol..I said car needs work I will take it.he said ok.since iam 15 at the time I had 500 saved cash I had ,I forked over that and said keep pink slip but let me take car home with this extra 70 I had stash ..for the tow..guy said cool when will u pay up I said two weeks he said cool shook hands .I call tow pay 65 for about a 35 to 40 mile drive north to SALINAS CA for the final resting spot on las casitas Dr Salinas ca. Tow rolled up and pulled car quik and into the dusk evening we went..

My first IMPALA needed love so I was driving around Salinas ca when I spotted a el Camino Brown runner, for IMPALA engine swap ,el Camino was for sale for 700 on window I knocked on nearest door owner said yes for sale,I say could I see engine please guy said ok let me get keys ,after he popd hood I noticed a dressed up 350 with no leaks clean for being on that exterior body I thought maybe engine looked like crap.so Isaid let me drive he said ok .. I drove the car around the corner without him he said ya ,go ahead I said is it ok I give it a little gas to test the engine and hear for sounds ...I took off and gave it the good ol gas to the floor pan test ..and everything powerfull. I said 400 cash he goes uhhh ok ..deal..
I had my local mecanic man handle the engine swap and get it to fire up and relive again..I gave mechanic the pink slip for the labor and he could sell the el Camino for future money for him ..all in all good deal. Car was ready week later and fired up and drove around back road near mechanics place and all in all good.by this point I put the missing pieces back on and placed car for sale after a clean white primer job I did for roof and body.. car looked clean with door handles back new lights I ordered back chromes I needed sold for $ 3ooo.

I end up finding a 1959 impala sport coupe 2 door. All original smurff blue aka harbor blue with blue 3 tone inside..283 auto car ..lots of potential ..I seen it on craigslist and I had to jump on it before other die hard people could get a chance..I notice after talking with guy hes busy and can't show car ,he mentions people ask questions and don't show up car was located in wattsonville ca in a backyard since the early 90s notice listing was no longer there .posting blank .so I remember I called him..I checked my cell and found his number he says nobody serious hit him up ,plus he was busy hard to get a hold of either ways Maybe that's why car was still sitting with no real buyers everyone wants it cheap or don't have cash or people aint serious anymore..so I call guy in august of 2011 still had it ,I said could I see car he said I couldn't cuz he was thinking of keeping it and so on..I said if u change your mindi will call u some other time in the future ..I call again in Feb 2012 he calls me back after no pick up I say hey call me its the impala dude from Salinas he goes ok after we spoke ..I asked hey let me make u a offer for your car its just sitting ..I even mentioned come on man I been wanting this year since 15 really!
I said let's meet sunday early at 830am he said ok I got address and off Sunday I went hitn alarm cuz I was ready to view didn't want time to pass..since this man is busy, changes his mind, and don't pick up sometimes ..I said here's my chance..let's make it happen bring the impala home john..u could do it..I meet up in a local business district in wattsonville ca..I was taken 4 blocks from where he said meet up at..parked my car and began to walk behind some big house with tall back fence..we opened fence to find the elusive year that has been slipping threw my grips everytime I find one or wanna close the deal..cuz I found two others since 15 years old.iam 30 now barelee got a hold of the super year.it has the original 283 block under hood still no transmission no side chromes and just needs floor patch both sides where your feet go,and one drive side quarter panel small patch..that's it fins are cherry and gas rear door area cherry for a 59 I have seen 59s with the whole back shot.and beyond repair.this is a keeper and a very hard impala to come by I began to realize even more since the struggle to buy one that's its getting harder to buy classic impalas now ,there going into the hands of people that want hi doller for projects or done cars ridiculous really.but either way asking price was 4,500 obo for 59
I said will u take my offer of 2,500 since it needs a bit of work the Harley bike owner says no!! Man its a 59 ,I ok I will toss in 500 more that's what I brought with me besides tow fee,he said ok after talking verbal impala know how.. final price of 3k flat for project 59 all glass there clean fins complete front with top chromes and cheap tires and no hubcaps or rear lights or bezels in rear or chromes in rear I still wanted car cuz chromes u could locate the actual car u can't ,no donor ,no parts car, just a clean 2 door project..I called tow shook hands and deal was done iam a proud owner till this day of the 59 sport coupe its sitting in the same garage on California street where all there other impalas sat.the rest is history it seems this year was bound to come to me I just had to wait the long path..but my triple black phantom idea is on the way check my advice topic on in..thanks for reading and until next time impalas forever.
P.s. I will not sell this impala it means to much to mee and I wanna complete my vision of this car and enjoy it wherever I want and hand it down to my two lil baseball playing boys ...peace and bottoms up enjoy these beautiful classics but when u come across a cat eyes don't even think of selling it.cuz u may never ever come across one again speaking from experience ...till next time Chevy posse.. this was my 8th impala ..

Grab a cup of Joe for this one:
Back in the day, I had recently completed my first restoration of a ’58 Bel Air stove bolt 6, 4 door sedan. Being proud of my achievement, I had a picture of it in my office cubicle. The manager having admired the results and commented “Very nice car but it’s too bad it wasn't a convertible” He noticing my reaction went on to say. “Don’t take any offense, I had recently read an article the 58 ragtops were under-priced in the market and expected to increase”. I responded with “Any chance you could share that article?” The next day he brings it in and it turns out there indeed was a small blurb by Rick Cole listing the 5 top undervalued cars with the 58 Impala ragtop topping the list. My quest was born.
At that time, (pre-internet) networking consisted of local clubs, friends and perusing Old Cars weekly, Hemmings and the like. My first find was a ragtop located in Montana which required a complete restoration. The price was right enough to investigate. ( I was such a newbie) None-the-less, I actually invested in a plane trip from the east coast to check it out.
FWIW – I had never before set foot on a commercial plane before.
Long story short, the seller turned out to be a bait & switch operator stipulating he would only sell the car if the buyer agreed to restore it in HIS shop. Being interested in the VIN data, while we were negotiations, one of his flunky’s comes into the office carrying the actual VIN tag he just removed from the car. At that point the deal was over and I was gone. I spent the rest of the time enjoying the beauty of Montana and Glacier Park in Canada.
Returning home, a little embarrassed, I soon returned to Hemmings and other advertising mags in search of a ’58 ragtop. My next contact was Tom from Ohio advertising (3) 58 ragtops to select from. Still a bit hesitant for the Montana trip, I initially told him I’d head over following the Easter weekend. I later called him back telling him “Forget that, I’ll be heading out the last week in March instead.”
So I drove out solo to a small town by Dayton, OH to see what he had. Tom is what I’ll refer to as a private car corral seller having some 20-30 cars on site. He basically flips car sales privately. As advertised, he had the (3) 58’s to choose from. I almost got swayed into a ’62 factory 4 spd. while there, but I soon got a grip on my original mission quest and made the deal for the best ’58 he had. A check of $1000 secured the deal on April 1st.
In passing, Tom mentioned he had just sold a like ’58 to one of John Mellencamp’s local buyers. “Yeah right” I’m thinking. The deal included transportation once the remaining balance had cleared.
Returning home and only having about 50% of the balance in liquid assets, I had no idea where the remainder would come from. But as luck would have it, I was fortunate enough to sell my Bel Air for the actual cost of its restoration. (A rare achievement for a 4 Dr sedan) With the balance paid, I then anxiously awaited delivery. It arrived some 6 weeks later around 3:00 am. (You all know the feeling)
Now with the days of the internet, a fitting end to this tale reveals a surprising discovery. While on You Tube, some commentaries were posted regarding what kind of car Mellencamp used in his “Rumbleseat” and “Rooty-toot-toot” videos. Any viewing will show it to be a ’58 ragtop. But the twist is with a poster comment replying with: “Yup, The seller is a local guy over here in Ohio” and essentially supporting Tom’s story from so many years before.
Would I do all again? You bet! But I’d find a way to keep the original Bel Air next time. LOL
