do you think it may be backfiring through the carb?

Since we aren't there with you, we might ask a lot of questions, in order to help you out. Might seem boring, but people can't help until we get all the right info. So...

Tell us how you came to have the truck. Did your grandpa or someone else give you the truck. Maybe you bought it? Was it running when you got it? You said earlier it had a Holley motor boat carb on it. Did it run with that carb?

If you're eager to rebuild the carb, I find alot of how-to information and suggested rebuild kits when I do a Bing or Google search for 'how to rebuild an edelbrock performer carb'. I even saw some youtube videos listed. You might want to read through those links and watch some of the videos.

As has been posted, it's not terribly difficult. You just need some parts, knowledge, a clean place to work, the right tools, and some patience. You might even use your camera to take a few pics while you take it apart so you can look at them if you aren't certain how something was on the carb before you took it apart. One other suggestion I've seen is do the work on a metal tray with low sides like a baking pan/cookie sheet. That may help prevent you accidently knocking/sweeping some of the small parts off your work surface. Don't use grandma's good cookie sheets!

So, when you bought it, was it a running, driving truck? Or did you and Grandpa have to tow it home?

OK, but not perfect. Have you done any other engine work to it besides swapping carbs?
