I was inspecting the drag link connecting the steering box to the idler arm. I noticed one of the springs was broken, so I've got to get the rebuild kit. But in the service manual, it mentions a protective boot. My car has no such thing, but it sounds like it would be important.

I was looking on Chevs of the 40s website, didn't see any boots, but I noticed these:

http://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail/8128/Chevrolet ...

http://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail/13785/Chevrole ...

So, my questions are, how important is the boot and do I need to make one, and do I need these seals listed above? Does anyone have a picture of a drag link in proper condition, with the boot and seals installed? The parts manual picture didn't seem to show this.

Thanks,
Dane

The boots keep dirt and water out. I would say they are important. My '54 has the all rubber boots.

yes they are a good thing to install to keep all foreign matter out of your unit I favor the metal for 2 reasons cost originality and they will not deform like the rubber will over time

These pictures from my '54 might help.

I agree--you need the rubber seals.
