I realize battery acid does this but I've had other cars in the battery area weren't this bad. Yet this one has the nice solid body but affected. Would it be probably sat and a battery leaked all over? What decade did battery leak like this. I'm learning day to day sorry if I come off novice but that's what I am everyone.

Your battery leaked, another area that this happens to is below/around the brake master cylinder, brake fluid is caustic too. I bought a 62 parts car and the cowl area was rusted, but the areas that normally rust were fine, floors and braces, bottoms of fenders, etc.

Batteries can still leak these days. There are more more than a few C5 Corvette owners that found this out when batteries leaked on the computer systems in the Vettes. THAT is an expensive repair to make.

that is very common. my 62 had some rust there where the battery leaked/ran over. i removed the rust, painted and then coated the whole area under the battery box and the box with undercoating. no more problems. plus,i keep an eye on the battery and wash that area down occasionally.

I once had a car with a malfunction voltage regulator, caused the battery to boil, spreading acid all over the engine compartment, anywhere i put my arms in this engine compartment, skin was acid burned.

If the car was stored for a long time, and the battery became discharged, it might have frozen, and cracked, leaking acid on the metal. If it was just washed off, and not neutralized with baking soda, it will cause the battery tray to disintegrate. Not much that you can do about this now, except to replace the rusted parts. Many new batteries are made of a gel cell, and you don't have this problem any longer.

Years ago, batteries were filled by gas station attendants. Usually they were filled until the overflowed out the top or through the vent. All that acid water moved to the tray, then down to the inner fender sheet metal.
Replace the rusty metal, undercoat it and use a battery that doesn't leak.
You can neutralize any acid by mixing some baking soda in water and brush on. Then flush off with clear water.

Thanks everyone Junky I think your right information I got was the guy had bunch cars in a storage facility. Probably sat and blew up/leaked.
Didn't know gas attendants used to fill them up back in the days those guys were busy. Thanks for the knowledge.
What's the best repair method how far do you guys cut out the metal and you seal etc?

My battery tray was pretty shot out. I bought a shiny new repop and was ready to go again in no time. They sell something you lay on the tray first and I think anotheryou can wrap your battery in that's supposed to prevent it from happening again.
