Next step to finish sanding and get her in primer, and ready for paint. I test fit the front bumper last weekend, and finally got that lined up, and all the brackets where they need to be. And the wife has been sanding the door jambs during the day while I`m at work!

Yup Joe, she`s already laid claim to it! Since I first met her, she`s always said she loved the little AC Cobras. But once she saw this Vette, that was it. She`s a convert now!
Tat, it was repainted red when we got it, but we`re going to put it back to it`s original Steel Cities Gray. According to the data I`ve seen, that color only came with a black interior, should look good, like this.....

WOW! Great stuff Richard! Thanks very much... saved to my files.
Some nice looking Vettes there Joe!
Thanks TAT!
We think the Steel Cities Gray and black interior will look good, (AND it will match the trim tag on the door too!)
The car was originally sold in North Carolina, we are it`s 3rd owner, and we plan to take it back there when we retire to a cabin in the mountains.

Are you aware that the Steel City's Gray is a GM Firemist color ? I had this exact car combo when I bought it new. The Steel City's Gray looks almost silver / pewter in the day time. After dark it looks almost Pea Green. It is absolutly totally a cool color. I was thinking of looking for a 71 SPECIFICALLY Steel City's Gray color but I found and bought a 72 Briar Blue BB instead.
We got the red off, and down to the original color when we were sanding it . I noticed a greenish tint in it! I can`t WAIT to get it repainted. We`ve been doing body work on it for over 3 months now, and it`s getting close!

I think we got most of the sanding done for now. But with the epoxy primer, since we didn`t shoot the paint within 3 days, we`ll have to apply another coat of primer, then rough it up, and paint.
We`re going with PPG primer & paint, a single stage acrylic urethane that comes pre-mixed in the steel cities gray.

Jim, once you sand the primer, it's ready for paint. The scratch is the mechanical etch.
Unless your painter is really used to it, single stage metallic is thee hardest thing to paint. Single stage is best for solid colors. I'd rather walk through fire than try to paint that Color in SS. Extremely hard to get the color even and the paint flat at the same time. Would definately suggest base clear.
I painted the Dupont Imron single stage version of this color MANY years ago and it was easy(check the grey Corvette in the picture trail link below). NEVER used the PPG products. Hope it's easier than Kenney says....

We`ve used the PPG before, it seems to be pretty easy to work with. I have a friend that has painted several cars before, he says he`ll help me with this one.

GOOD NEWS....
My friend came over Thursday morning and we sprayed the door jambs, hood, tops, and other smaller parts.
BAD NEWS....
The gal at the paint store got the mix ratio wrong, and shorted me a quart of reducer.
GOOD NEWS....
The jambs, hood, tops & parts look GREAT!
BAD NEWS....
The paint store was closed today (Friday), so I`ll have to wait till Monday to get the extra reducer.
GOOD NEWS....
My friend will be able to come over Monday after work to spray the car, instead of Sunday as planned.
BAD NEWS....
We had some lights resting on the garage door brace. I forgot about them, and when I tried to open the garage door, they fell on the hood.
GOOD NEWS....
The damage to the hood is only a couple scatches, the hood is not broken. I`ve already wet sanded them out, so we can re-coat it when he sprays the car.
Pics to come when she`s done!
