This post is the fine line of allowed.
It IS NOT a want add. It is commentary.
For a long time I have been watching the Internet '59 ElCamino market. It is well known that I am a purist and like stock original autos. Especially original patina stuff.
It seems that ElCaminos that are for sale fall into two basic categories.
(1) Rat-Rods or Incomplete piles of parts and/or balls of rust or any combination thereof.
(2) mega-bucks hot rods with big block engines, four wheel disc brakes, giant wheels and either a radical custom interior or an Impala interior.
Just today my wife asked me if I wanted to sometime get another ElCamino and would I be willing to sell the '59 Impala to get one? I replied that being that I have owned the Impala for eleven years and spent a whole year of my life restoring it, that it was not for sale to get some other collector car. But, my five other collector cars would all be expendable if the right ElCamino came along and I would use my line of credit to finance the Elky until the other car(s) could be sold. In which she agreed. (We had a lot of great times cruising around in my Red '59 ElCamino when we were first together in the 1970s so she has a fond memory of that car as well as the Classic Cream and Aspen Green one we had in the 1980s.) We talked about my feelings for doing another restoration. At this point in my life, I can't see myself as being motivated to put another year into another car. And, I honestly haven't seen Elky restoration projects worthy of my interest.
Anyhoo, after many years of looking, a stock original nice Elky seems to be elusive. In fact, a six cylinder with three on the tree would not hurt my feelings. Funny how they seem not to exist now. Maybe like many of my past and present collector cars, one of these days one will fall right into my lap?
The one I had in high school in 1973~1977
The one I bought in 1981 and sold in 1985 (283 with three speed and overdrive, factory tinted glass.)

Yes, I'm watching that one, it is the closest to original one in a long time. But it is now at 20k and reserve not met. I'm interested to see what it bids to and also if the seller is actually going to sell it. On that one, the color is just not me.

Good luck! 'Original patina' on this era of GM car means the bottom foot of the car including the floorboards are rusted away! We got our Elky off an ebaY auction for $1300. It needed new floors, patch panels on rear fender skirts but otherwise was in reasonable condition and more importantly had most of the trim. Oh, and a previous owner had replace the pass rear fender from mid-wheel well to tail really badly. That fin sagged 1-1/2" and the outer tip of the tail light opening was 3/4" forward of parallel.
It had lot of the trim and factory posi rear end. It restored with some work but most cars are in similar rough shape so guys don't feel qualms about customizing them a little. Ours didn't have seats or engine/tranny so we installed '84 Caddy split power bench seats, 307 SBC and 2004 OD.
And we have as pretty a car as those above and have spent 1/4 the price they are listed at!! (don't count sweat equity - that just defrays the cost of a shrink!!! I beat on sheetmetal to straighten out my gray matter).

Hoss,
I too like cars to be stock and have had the same observation as you regarding the 59 El Camino. I have my eye on one locally that I see once a year at an annual car show. Every year the owner shows up with one more modification. There just does not seem to be a market for restoring these cars to stock, which is too bad. They are either customs or trashed, but seldom stock. Good luck in your hunt.

Thanks Jens,
I knew you could supply the poster child for my post. - Another one with the required Impala interior, huge wheels and race engine. The 42k asking price isn't bad compared to some I've seen. I like the red on the side moldings, that one has decent taste as far as modified ones go.

Hoss,
I agree with you - I like 'em pretty stock too, even down to the tires and wheels. I found this one in a field near the El Paso Airport where it had been "stored" for 22 years. After a year of tinkering, it's now running. I kinda like the patina and may just leave it that way. I will, however redo the interior, probably from Ciadella - their stuff is great.

It looks like the car is actually in New York and not Seattle. It has NY licence plates and the contact number is in NY as well.
Nevertheless, a clean car.

Thanks everyone for your replies, it seems that part of getting older is sometimes not being able to accept the costs of items nowadays. The reality for me is that probably a "stock" ElCamino is not in my future simply because I cannot afford one in the condition I would desire, and as I said previously, taking on another restoration is not in my future. (The Jens guy is incredible! I still think he has a magic Jennie or something going on out there in that work shop)
It was an interesting discussion, that redone in ElPaso Texas that belongs to "59Caminno" and the one posted by "DonSSDD" in Canada are exactly what trips my trigger.
