recently bought some fuellie heads and a new cam for my 79 z28,decided to pull motor and do it on engine stand.Stripped down motor, bores and bearings were still A1 as the motor had only done 4000 miles since the last guy had it rebuilt.I put in new rings but used the same shells and reassembled, checking every thing went together correct.Oil pump went back on untouchted and when fully assembled I gave it a prime with a drill.Put back in car and crank over no oil pressure yet, fire it up for 10 seconds no oil pressure. pull dizzy and drive shaft all look good, put drill with 3/8 rod and spade lug down hole .the drill loads right up, and when you stop it turns back a bit from the pressure of the pump, but no oil comes out the sender hole, what is wrong? I never removed the cam bearings and it had good oil pressure before. You can hear drain back when you stop the drill but no oil is coming up any of the push rods. please can someone help?thanks .

we need more info to correctly diagnose the problem, just curious, has the oil filter filed yet?
what brand oil filter are you using?
are you 100% sure theres 5 quarts minimum in the oil pan, and the dipstick reads oil?
what oil prime tool did you use?
did you install a NEW oil pump, perhaps a new high volume oil pump, and forget to verify that you have between 3/8" and 1/2" clearance between the oil pump pick-up and the oil pan floor?
read thru these links, and look over the pictures carefully

No I havent taken the filter off yet, ran out of time tonight(I'm in Australia) and plan to do that first thing in the morning, does the dizzy casting guide the oil at all?I have got air and blown back down the oil pressure hole(with the distbutor removed) and it sounds like it is just coming straight out in the valley where the dist goes in.thanks for the reply. dipstick on full mark, same oilpump put back on untouched.

Yes the bottom of the distributor with the 2 rings completes the passageways to take oil to the right side of the block. You probably can't get oil to either head without a primer that emulates the end of the distributor. I'd think you could see some oil pressure at the tap behind the intake though.

Had a thought last night that maybe I have left a plastic plug in the filter outlet when I was working on the motor to stop anything falling in that hole while engine is upside down being worked on.Well pulled oil filter this morning, oil comes out as soon as the filter breaks loose, so filter is getting oil, undo filter base and remove and guess what?clear plastic plug still in hole!Plug fit in so well and flush that I missed removing it when I put the filter base back on!Anyway oil going every way which now. What a relief motor can stay in the car!

Hey snowbear I did that with banjo fitting on my carb last spring. Carb was brand new, came with a plastic plug in the fuel inlet. I never knew it was there, I cranked and cranked on that motor no fuel, meter said 6 psi. So I broke it all down, again, was just sitting there in garage trying to figure out why a new carb was a piece of crap. I took the top off, no gas in bowls, no gas anywhere, ???? scratching my head. My dummy neighbor walks in and asks whats going on. He takes a look at the top of the carb and says whats that lil orange thing in this hole? So I looked, there was a plastic plug in the gas inlet hole. I was so glad I used a banjo fitting, or I would have never figured that out. Took a pair of needle nose pliers and pulled it out, put it back together, back on motor and hooked up. In fifteen minutes it was purring like a kitten. So don't beat yourself up, it happens to all of us.
