I've been wanting to put a valve in my heater circuit for a long time, and I was finally going to do it tonight. My dad gave me a used 1/2" ball valve. I removed the handle, and got a 1/2" close schedule 80 pipe nipple free from a local supply house. My intention was to mount it directly to the intake manifold. I found that when I tried mounting the valve assembly the shaft would hit the valve cover so I couldn't screw it in more than about one thread. At 9pm, and in my socks, I wasn't ready to pull the valve cover, so I put it back together they way it was.
I haven't decided whether I'll install it when I get around to doing my injectors, distributor, and valve cover gaskets, or if I'll put it in the middle of the heater hose floating instead of solidly mounted.

what are you trying to accomplish?
If you want to add a shutoff I recommend just installing it inline in the hose itself not on the intake.

I want to shut the coolant off to the heater core. I've owned the truck since 6000 miles, and it's always felt like some heat was getting to the air when on vent. It's possible the blend door doesn't seal as well as it could, I suspect the 200 degree coolant is simply heating up the whole heater box, Though.
Mounting the valve to the intake does several things. One, I don't have to buy another brass hose barb, in a size that isn't commonly found in retail plumbing section. It will keep the valve from flopping around and/or rubbing on stuff. Finally, it would be up near the top of the engine and be easily accessible with a small Crescent wrench to turn it on and off.

I use an inline shut off on my farm trucks like in the link below. 1/4 turn and they are off for the summer. A cable could be attached, but I lift the hood and turn. Any parts house can get them.

get a replacement inline vacuum operated valve used on many cars with ac. during summer, connect vacuum hose to a convenient vacuum source and during winter or whenever heat is needed, disconnect it. looks neater and is easier to install than a ball valve.

Neat idea but I don't think there IS a "convenient" vacuum source on a Vortec 7.4; the only two I can think of are for the fuel pressure regulator and that's buried, literally, beneath the rear of the enormous plenum - and the MAP sensor, which shoves directly into the intake, no hose. People with the first gen Vortec engines are pretty short of easy vacuum sources. Not like a TBI where you can steal vacuum right off the front of the TBI unit or throw a fitting into that hole in the intake runner behind the TBI.

That's quite bit more expensive than what I've got, and money is a big issue for me right now. Besides, I've gotten industrial grade parts for free, so far. Well, I guess if I buy a second hose barb, that won't be free.

Quite correct.
I actually looked into buying the bypass valve that the SUV's use, and is listed for my truck, even though I don't think any trucks actually use it. I was hoping that I could hook it up with factory connectors. I found that it would require a electrically switched vacuum actuator..... same one used on some 4wd systems. So that would be another purchase, and then I don't have the pig tail in my wiring harness that I can see, that would be controlled by my HVAC panel. I could use a stand alone switch, but I was hoping for something fully automatic if I were to go with that much expense. I suppose I could try the bone yard, and then go with a standalone switch.
My ball valve was going to be sooooo simple, and effective, until I ran into this clearance problem :-(

now on most of todays vehicles you cant close off the hoses to the heatercore because the coolant goes to other engine components through the heatercore hoses. The best tip I hav is to disconnect the heatercore hoses aand put them together with a union.

The heater circuit is not a bypass on a big block.

1. Clamp vise grips on the heater hose.
2. Close hood.

It worked good for me, and I also have my favorite tool with me.
