i just recently got my 57 bel air and the floor pan is coverd in some kind of tar is this normal if not any suggestion on how i can remove it

Mine was bare metal and I have seen them with a black primer but not any tar.

Are you referring to the inside or bottom side? Many cars were undercoated underneath. If it's on the top side, someone may have put some early bed liner type material on it to cut down noise.

i would leave it. it is probably some type of undercoating. it does cut down on noise and rust.

It might be hiding a patch to the floor pan. What does the underside look like.

Oh yeah, the 'ol hide the patch with tar routine, I know it well. Replaced the whole floor because of it.
Read the posts on removing undercoating, lots of info. there.
