When I painted by car I had the stainless polished, but now it's starting to look a littel cloudy. I've tried all kinds of stuff but nothing seems to bring it back to bright. I was at a car show last saturday and one guy said he uses a 3M rubbing compound and it was in a light blue wrapper. Anyone know what that is?
Any recommedations for a strong compound?

Hi Longboard,
I see in your avatar a '61 Chevy.
What stainless trim are you referring to - because most of the trim on the '61 is anodized aluminum.

Hmmm, I did not know this. I am talking about the side trim that goes all the way around the car and has a paint stripe in the middle of the quarter pannels. I chromed my grille and should have chromed the trim.

Glad you got back to us.... the side trim on the '61 is anodized aluminum.
Now, if someone polished it for you - and now it appears "cloudy" you could restore the finish with Mother's Billet polish.
BUT, that is only if the anodize was removed prior to the polishing process.
Old anodize can impart a cloudy appearance on aluminum. It can be stripped off using "EASY OFF" oven cleaner (note - this is the safest method but you cannot use the EASY OFF near the body paint.)

Okay, good to know. Thanks, I'll try different stuff and see what happens. It was beautiful and still is very nice, but you know how it goes. Prefectionism and OCD don't go together very well!

Take some MOther's Billet Polish and test a small section of your trim.
When the shop polished it - they may have removed the anodize. If the rag turns BLACK - you are a lucky camper.... go polish it by hand.
If the rag does not turn black - the anodize is still there.....and no amount of polishing will impart a high reflective shine.

It's all good. Plenty of black and more shine. Is there more I can do to get it too look like my chromed grille?

Hi Longboard,
I recommended the Billet polish because it does not scratch (at least to the human eye)
If you want to cut heavier... you can use Blue Magic - but you will see the "scratches" left from the abrasive.
Problem is this will be an ongoing maintenance headache.
You could clear the trim with a 2k clear once done and it would look pretty darn nice!
