Ok guys, the shop working on my 1948 Fleetline with a 235 engine (no babbit bearings), ordered a side access panel gasket, but it is too large. The box says it fits the 216/235. Were they different, or were certain years of 235 engines different from others? I know my engine came out of a truck, but I don't know what year. I'm trying to get this resolved today if possible. call me if you can 713-444-8225

3701541 Valve pushrod cover Gasket P/N 5 5/8" X 27" Tell them you need one for a 50-57 235. Check the head gasket before they go much further. What gasket kit did they get. Napa should have or get the correct gaskets.
Also get the stamped numbers behind the distributor and we can let you know what you have.

I think the early 235's in trucks did use the larger side cover. I once thought I had salvaged a 216 engine, since it had the large side cover. Measured the bore, & it was actually a 235. It came out of a postwar truck.

The 1940-1953 216 and the 1941- 1954 235 used the same pan gasket.
The gasket for a 1955-1962 235 is completely different and also fits a 1955 and up 261

Gene looks like you are talking pan gasket. He was questioning the pushrod cover gasket.

Ok guys, I have a 235 from 50-53 motor, found the part by calling a client with an original GM parts book and cross referencing numbers at Advance auto parts. Too bad I missed the cutoff for delivery on the 3rd, so old Blue sat idle through this 4th of July. It will be more impressive this time next year anyway.

I see you got the gasket, I am suprised that NAPA could not get you one at least on an overnight basis. I have run into problems with the rocker arm cover gasket for a 216,which requires cutting out the area around some valve springs. Not a NAPA item but came from one of the other chains. Knowing exactly what engine you have helps when it comes to ordering parts. Checking out the number on the block by the distributor and also check out the construction date code located to the rear on the block just above the pan flange, starter may obscure it though.

Need the numbers in back of the distributor. Will be 3 letters then numbers. They are stamped in the block. Take a look at this and look under engine serial numbers.

Ok, today I got all the gaskets, got them installed, rear seal done, etc. So crisis averted. My car runs great and doesn't leak... once it starts.. see post: Terrible start.
